Samuel D. “Sam” Carter, 59 of Manvel, formerly of Devils Lake, ND died on April 6, 2009 at his home in the loving care of his family and Hospice. Funeral Services for Sam will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Ken Bowman will officiate and burial will be in the Upham Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Serving as Casket Bearers for Sam will be Robert Clark, Chad Keller, David Richards, Louie Mangahas, Jerry Johnson, Johnny Clark, Bruce Ringstrom and Bob Ringstrom. Music will be provided by Samantha Carter-Richards, soloist and Lynda Pearson, organist. ÿSamuel Duane, son of Duane and Irma (Hatten) Carter was born on January 15, 1950 in Devils Lake where he was reared and educated, graduating from Devils Lake Central High School in the class of 1969. Sam entered the United States Army in March of 1970. He served in Germany with the 61st Artillery and was honorably discharged on January 12, 1972 with the rank of Private First Class. He also served with the North Dakota Army National Guard at Camp Grafton for 17 years and was honorably discharged January 12, 2004 with the rank of Sergeant E5. Sam’s life long career was as a master carpenter except for the short time that he spent in the mountains of Colorado working on a demolition crew. Some of the highlights of his career were as the assistant supervisor with Mortenson Construction in the construction of the PHS Hospital at Belcourt, ND; building homes and apartment complexes with Roers Construction in Devils Lake; worked with Twin Cities Construction and was the supervisor of the building of the Minot Library and worked for Don’s ABC Seamless of Grand Forks from May of 1996 to present. Sam was united in marriage to Sharon Olafson on June 15, 1993 and they have made their home in Manvel. Sam was a member of the American Legion Post #0299 of Manvel. Sam was at one time married to Mary Walters. Sam was an avid outdoorsman who loved boating, fishing and camping. Wood working was a true passion of Sam’s from building a house to a small craft project. He will forever be loved and forever be in our hearts and memories. Sam is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Ann; Children: Samantha (David) Richards, Owatonna, MN; Melissa (Louie) Mangahas, Surprise, Arizona; Mariam Carter, Sleepy Eye, MN; Step Children: Danny Clark, Gladstone, Montana; Robert (Nichole) Clark also of Gladstone; Johnny (Kathy) Clark, Gilby, ND; Sharry (Jerry) Johnson, Milnor, ND and Chad (Nichole) Keller of Upham, ND; Fourteen Grandchildren; Parents: Duane and Irma Carter, Devils Lake; Brother: Brent (Becky) Carter of Rockford, MN; Sister: Brenda (Dennis) Crawford, Minot, ND; Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Carter; son, Jacob Carter; brother, Craig Carter and grandparents;
