John L. Nyland, Jr. 79 of Devils Lake, ND died on Sunday afternoon, April 5, 2009 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Funeral Services for John will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Ken Bowman will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may sign the register book at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Music will be provided by Kevin Regan, soloist and Lynda Pearson, organist. John Lloyd Nyland, son of John and Goldie (Handy) Nyland was born on August 12, 1929 at Devils Lake, ND where he would live his entire life. John graduated from Devils Lake Central High School in the class of 1947. After graduation, John joined the North Dakota National Guard at Camp Grafton and began working for his Dad. On July 23, 1950, John was united in marriage to Arlouise Hall at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. They made their home in Devils Lake until John was activiated with as a member of the National Guard in 1951 and served his country, first based at Camp Rucker, Alabama and then deployed to Korea in January of 1952. His was honorably discharged in January of 1953. He returned to Devils Lake where he lived, worked and raised his family. In 1958, John purchased “Electrical Service” from his Dad and was owner/operator until retiring in 1992. John was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and served on the Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge and the VFW. John loved wood working and creating things with wood and enjoyed hunting and fishing. John was a devoted husband, Dad and grandpa who left a legacy of faith and love. John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Arlo Children: Jackie Erickstad and her husband, Mark of rural Devils Lake Steve Nyland Toni Pflaum and her husband, Brent all of Devils Lake. Grandchildren: Chad Erickstad and Shawn (Marta) Erickstad; Steven Nyland, Tyann Jore and Dakota Jore; Travis Pflaum, Megan (Dan) Lebrun and Matthew Pflaum. Great Granddaughters: Sophia Erickstad; Jasmine Jore and Miah Towne; Savanna Lebrun and Aubrie Lebrun. Sister: Jean Lingor and her husband, Clarence of Devils Lake Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Stuart Erickstad.
