ELMER HOIME

Elmer Hoime, 94 of Edmore, ND passed away peacefully at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake on Sunday, December 27, 2009. Funeral Services for Elmer will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, Edmore. Rev. Donald Reynolds will officiate and burial will be in the Edmore Cemetery in the spring. Military Honors will be accorded by the John R. Ogilvie Post #8939, Edmore Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Johnson-Myrvik American Legion Post #193 of Edmore, Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Elmer began his life with a twin brother, Edwin and they were born on April 22, 1915 at the home of their parents, Thomas and Christina (Lahd) Hoime in Overland Township, rural Edmore. His parents had ten boys and one girl. Elmer attended Overland School and enjoyed life on the family farm. Elmer helped with the family farm for several years and also rented some land. He worked and shared farm equipment with his brothers. When World War II began, Elmer was inducted into the United States Army on February 6, 1942. After basic training, he was assigned to the South Pacific Theater and served with the Infantry in Hawaii and New Guinea. The Armed Forces took six of his brothers as well and they served a combined 302 months overseas. They all returned safely when the war was over. Elmer met Ida Wurgler after he returned to Edmore following his honorable discharge. Ida was a waitress at a local café in Devils Lake. They were united in marriage on September 18, 1946 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake. Elmer and Ida settled in the Edmore area where they farmed their entire lives and also raised dairy and beef cattle. They had a child Milton who passed away in infancy and then in 1958 they lovingly adopted a son, Bryan. In 1998 they semi-retired from farming and moved into Edmore and Bryan continued the farming operation. In 2000 they moved to Devils Lake for health reasons and spent time in the Heartland Assisted Living and Care Facilities. Ida passed away on December 23, 2005 and Elmer continued to live in Heartland until his death. Elmer and Ida were avid bowlers and very active in the Edmore Concordia Church. Elmer was a life member of the VFW, and 60 plus year member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Senior Citizens and Community Club activities in Edmore. Elmer served on the Overland Township Board for 32 years. Farming was Elmer’s passion but he did enjoy time in the outdoors and fishing. Elmer is survived by his loving son, Bryan of Grand Forks. Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ida; an infant son, Milton; his ten brothers and one sister.
