Barbara Jean King was born on November 8, 1938 at Fort Totten, ND the daughter of Jerome and Mary (Lohnes) King. She was reared and educated in the St. Michael area and later at Fort Totten. She also attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Devils Lake. She moved to Oakland, California and attended Laney College, where she received her certification as a seamstress in 1968. In 1969, Barbara returned to Fort Totten for a time and then moved to Denver, Colorado where she lived the rest of her life. While living in Denver she worked as a seamstress at Western Arts and later worked as a nurse at the Denver General Hospital until ill health forced her to retire.
Barbara was a woman of great strength and determination. She had been told as a young woman that she would never walk again or be able to have a family. She did both. She dedicated her life to caring for and providing for her children as a single parent. She provided a loving and happy home for her family and she raised three grandsons when their mother was unable.
After her children were older, Barbara spent many hours doing bead work and sewing. She enjoyed going to Bingo and the casino with her friends and meeting new friends on her outings.
Barbara left a legacy of love and devotion for family and strength and courage to face each challenge that comes along in life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family wants to especially thank, Floyd “Bill” Joshua for his being there to care for Barbara on the good days and the bad days. He was truly a blessing in Barbara’s life and a blessing to her family.
