Madeline “Madge” Brekke, 88, of Devils Lake, claimed God’s promise of eternal life on Monday, December 19, 2005 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Funeral Services for Madge will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Harold Ovre will officiate and burial will be in the Hatton Cemetery in the spring.
Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Music will be provided by Russell Pearson, Soloist and Lynda Pearson, Organist with Congregational Hymns.
Madge was born Madeline Marie Evenson to Sven and Melina Marie (Solberg) Evenson on August 13, 1917 at Hatton, ND. Madge grew up in Hatton, N.D. and received her teaching certificate from Mayville State Teachers College. She was an educator and co-owner of a children’s specialty shop in Rugby, N.D. She selflessly gave countless hours of her time to numerous charitable organizations. Madge held leadership roles in Sons of Norway (Life Member), The Rugby Literary Club, WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Association) and St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake.
Madge was united in marriage to Clarence M. Brekke on July 3, 1940 at Moorhead, Minnesota. They moved to Devils Lake in 1961 and have made their home here through the years.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 65 years, Clarence Brekke, of Devils Lake
Daughter: Bonnie Hanson and her husband, Jon of Sister Bay, Wisconsin
Son: Steven Brekke and his wife, Patti of White Bear Lake, Minnesota
Five grandchildren: Ingrid (Jay) Stukerjurgen, Breta (David) Brown and Thor (Belinda) Hanson; Jessica (Dan) Welsch and Stephanie (Jamie) Williams.
Three Great Grandsons: Brek Stukerjurgen, Jakob Brown and Charlie Welsch
Madge is preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and four brothers.
