Alice E. Svercl, 93, of Devils Lake formerly of rural Lawton, ND died on Tuesday evening, November 18, 2008 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Mass of Christian Burial for Alice will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Robert Pecotte will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
Serving as Casket Bearers for Alice will be Joe Reiger, Cory Lucking, Curtis Reiger, Brian Reiger, Matthew Reiger, George Reiger and Larry McPeek.

Alice Eva was born on December 20, 1914 in Walsh County, Grafton, ND the daughter of John and Josephine (Sherck) Kovarik. She was reared and educated in the Lankin, North Dakota area where she attended a country school. As a young woman, she worked for several years in a cook car.
On October 4, 1939, Alice was united in marriage to Ernest G. Svercl at Lankin. They established their home on a farm at rural Lawton where Alice faithfully farmed along side her husband and devoted herself to caring for her family. They farmed for 14 years then moved to Devils Lake in 1957. Alice worked for Fairview Grocery for 17 years until her retirement in 1984. In 2001, Alice moved to the Heartland Care Center where she was so loving cared for by the wonderful staff until her death. Ernest died on June 8, 2005.
Alice was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Circle. She was also a member of the Eagles’ Auxiliary.
In their younger years, Alice and Ernest loved to dance and enjoyed evenings at the Eagles Club. Alice enjoyed baking and sharing her homemade goodies with family and friends. Alice was so proud of her five daughters and they always had such a wonderful time together. Alice never let a moment go by with sharing her love and letting each of her daughters know how very special they were to her.

Irene Fuller and her husband, Mick of Anaconda, Montana,
LaVerne Reiger and her husband, George of Denver, Colorado,
Lorraine Berman and her husband, Mark of Bismarck, ND;
Fourteen Grandchildren;
Twenty-Six Great Grandchildren;
Four Great Great Grandchildren;
Sister: Marian Berdal and her husband, Freddie of Petersburg, ND;
Sister-In-Law: Lydia Kovarik of Park River, ND;
Several nieces, nephews and their families also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest; granddaughter, Sherry McGath; son-in-law, Richard Reiger; brother: Charlie Kovarik; sisters, Bessie Kosbud and Sylvia Swartz.
