Genevieve R. Nelson, 92 of Devils Lake died on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial for Gen will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Dale Kinzler will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 5:30 p.m. Rosemary Marcotte will lead the Rosary. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers for Gen will be Jason Nelson, Eric Nelson, Cory Nelson, Jeremy Nelson, Ben Pawlowski and Dennis Windjue. Honorary Bearers will be Dick Courtney, Lynn Nelson, Dennis Scharf, Leland Windjue, Norman Ringstrom, Howard Miller, Cliff Larson and Gen’s many dear friends and relatives. Reading the Sacred Scriptures will be Rachel Nelson and Sara Nelson Bringing Forth the Eucharistic Gifts will be Melissa Pawlowski, Faith Nelson, Hope Nelson and Hannah Nelson. Music will be provided by Lynne Webster, soloist and JoDee Lagein, organist. Genevieve Scharf was born on January 3, 1916 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake to Adam and Barbara (Kreamer) Scharf. She attended school in Minnewaukan Township and later St. Mary’s Academy in Devils Lake. After high school, Gen moved to Minot and was employed at the Singer Company and also at the Ellison Dress Shop. She also worked for Dr. Carlson for two years before returning to Devils Lake in 1940. She then began working at the Bonds Dress Shop. Gen was united in marriage to Helmer Nelson on November 14, 1943 at Grand Forks, ND. They lived on the Nelson family farm, rural Devils Lake. In 1945 their first son, Ronald was born and two years later, Gary was born. Helmer passed away on May 10, 1975 and after his death, Gen moved to Devils Lake and has made her home here through the years. She was employed by the J.C. Penney Co., Barker’s Apparel and later working for the State School for the Deaf, retiring in 1980. Gen has enjoyed making crafts, spending time with her grandchildren, attending concerts and traveling. Gen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Jude’s Society, the Rebekah Lodge, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, Elks and Eagles Auxiliary. Gen is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Ronald and Deb Nelson of Devils Lake; Gary and Carol Nelson of Whitefish, Montana Grandchildren: Jason (Deb) Nelson, Eric (Michelle) Nelson, Cory (Jacinda) Nelson, Jeremy Nelson, Melissa (Tim) Pawlowski, Rachel Nelson and Sara (Tim) Nelson. Great Grandchildren: Ben Pawlowski, Faith Nelson, Hope Nelson, Hannah Nelson, Owen Nelson and Joseph Nelson Very Special Friend: Dick Courtney of Devils Lake She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Helmer; brothers, Joe and John Scharf and sister, Mary Lange.
