CLARENCE ALFRED SATRANG

Clarence (Alfred) Satrang was born on November 24, 1916 in Dunseith where he grew up on a farm in the Turtle Mountains. Alfred volunteered to serve our country in the United States Army during World War II. While stationed in Sydney, Australia he met and married Beryl Mary Graham on July 14, 1945. Although they journeyed to the United States separately, he was reunited with Beryl when he met her on the train in Minot, ND in April of 1946. Alfred introduced her to “life in the hills” where they made their first home on the Clarence Bye farmstead. In 1947, Alfred and Beryl moved to Rolette where together they raised three children, Corrine, James and Kent. Alfred worked at R & O Contractors of Rolette from 1947 until 1952. Alfred then accepted a job with the Farmers Union (Cenex) in Rolette. For 30 years, Alfred delivered fuel to people all over the Rolette area. He knew the area “like the back of his hand.” He retired from the Farmers Union (Cenex) in 1982. Alfred was a member of Valle Lutheran Church, Dethman-Armstrong American Legion Post #194, Rolette Country Club, Farmers Union. He was also a member and served on the Board of the Rolette Senior Citizens Organization. Alfred loved retirement life. He became a great gardener and partnered with Beryl to can his produce – most of which was consumed by the grandkids! Another one of Alfred’s favorite places to spend his time was on the Rolette Golf Course “practicing his golf swing”. While he never claimed to master the art of golf, he sure mastered the art of friendship both on the course and off the course. Alfred always had a cup of coffee and smile for the many folks who came through his squeaky back screen door. On March 13, 2009 Alfred was reunited with his wife, Beryl, his parents Melvin and Inga (Rue) Satrang, his brothers, Alvin and John Satrang and sisters, Berdella (Roy) Clark and Lela (Lawrence) Wenstad. Alfred is survived by his children, Corrine Satrang of Grafton, ND; James Satrang and his wife Sharry of Wellsburg, West Virginia and Kent Satrang and his wife, Joleen of Fargo, ND; Ten grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Clyde Satrang and his wife, Marge, Mt. Iron, MN and several nieces and nephews around the United States and Australia. Services for Alfred will be held Tuesday March 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Valle Lutheran Church in Rolette. Rev. Clarence Stanley and Rev. John Hesford will officiate and burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at Mandan, ND in the spring. Military Honors will be accorded by the Dethman-Armstrong American Legion Post #194. Visitation will be held at Valle Lutheran Church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
