George R. Streifel, 75 of Devils Lake formerly of Oberon, ND died early Monday morning, May 21, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial for George will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Fr. Robert Pecotte will celebrate the Mass. Graveside Services for George will be held at St. James Catholic Cemetery, Minnewaukan on Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Military Honors will be accorded by the Gunnerud-Dietrich American Legion Post #86 of Minnewaukan, Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lake Region Honor Guard of Camp Grafton. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers for George will be Dennis Streifel, Bill Streifel and Nick Streifel and Jerry Bogan, John Sogge and Dave Kartes. Honorary Bearers will be his grandchildren, Jennifer, Lindsey, Katie and Justin Streifel and daughters-in-law, Rose and Cindy Streifel. Music will be provided by Claudette Carlson, soloist, Deanna Hanson, pianist and JoDee Lagein, organist. George Rochus Streifel was born on May 12, 1932 on a farm in Pierce County, near Esmond, ND to Nick and Catherine (Grossman) Streifel. At a very young age, he moved with his family to Minnewaukan, ND where he was raised and educated. In 1952, George entered the United States Army, serving his country during the Korean War from 1953 to 1954. After his Honorable Discharge, George returned to the Minnewaukan area and began farming. George was united in marriage to Virginia Hager on May 28, 1960 at St. James Catholic Church in Minnewaukan. They made their home near Minnewaukan until 1966 when they moved to a farm near Oberon. In July of 2002 they moved to Devils Lake where they have since made their home. On June 17, 2005, George moved to Heartland Care Center and on April 27, 2006 moved to the Good Samaritan Center. George was a member of the Gunnerud-Dietrich American Legion Post #86 of Minnewaukan and former member of St. James Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council and also the Building Committee. After moving to Devils Lake he was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. George enjoyed polka music, traveling and playing cards. He was a true steward of the land and truly loved farming. But the most special moments and treasured times of George’s life were his 47 years with his wife, Virginia and time spent with his children and grandchildren. George is survived by his loving wife, Virginia of Devils Lake Sons and Daughters-In-Law: Dennis and Cindy Streifel Bill and Rose Streifel Nick Streifel all of Oberon Grandchildren: Twins, Jennifer and Lindsey Streifel of Grand Forks and Katie Streifel and Justin Streifel of Oberon. Brothers and Sisters-In-Law: Paul and Irene Streifel of Minnewaukan Harold and Carolyn Streifel of West Fargo, ND Sisters and Brothers-In-Law: Helen Bogan of Montevideo, Minnesota Carolyn and Byron Butters of Andover, Minnesota Mavis and Dale Halvorson also of Minnewaukan Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Leona Sogge and brothers-in-law, Floyd Sogge and Loren Bogan.
