Marvin F. Modrow, 87 of Devils Lake, ND died on Saturday, December 30, 2006 while under hospice care at the Good Samaritan, Loveland, Colorado. Funeral Services for Marvin will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Devils Lake with Rev. Marvin Winstryg officiating. Burial will be in the Persilla Watts Cemetery, Rugby, ND in the spring. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday, January 9, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a time of sharing with family and friends at 7:00 p.m. Marvin Fredrick Modrow was born to parents, Fred and Mabel (Deeter) Modrow on January 24, 1919 on the family homestead in rural Pierce County, near Barton, ND. Marvin attended South Valley School, District #11 through grade 4. He and his family moved to Rugby, where he attended Rugby Public School through 12th grade. He graduated from Rugby High School in 1937. When his family moved to Rugby, he learned the basics of blacksmithing from his father, who had his own shop. Those skills helped him all of his life. He was always able to “make” whatever he needed. He did various jobs in the area including seasonal farm work on the homestead for his uncle. He worked for C & G of Rugby as a utility repairman. Marvin was united in marriage to Naomi Brown on October 26, 1941 in Rugby. After marriage, they moved to Harvey, ND where he worked at the C & G Store there. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was inducted on September 24, 1942 at Fort Snelling, MN and was assigned to the medical corps. He was sent to X-Ray school at Fort Bliss, Texas and received his training in William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Texas. Marvin was sent overseas and served in the South Pacific arena including New Guinea and Luzon with the 54th Evac Hospital. He was honorably discharged on October 10, 1945 at Fort Lewis, Washington with the rank of Technician 4th Grade, receiving several medals including a Bronze Service Star. He and his family returned to Rugby where he worked for C & G and Coast to Coast until he began working for the Good Samaritan Hospital and Johnson Clinic as both a Lab and X-Ray Technician. He worked there until 1967 at which time, they moved to Devils Lake where he worked 18 years for Mercy Hospital. He retired in 1985. Marvin was a member of the First United Methodist Churches in Rugby and Devils Lake and was very active as a choir member until his eyesight failed. He also served on the Administrative Board, as Trustee and also volunteered as custodian and handyman. He was a Sunday School Teacher and also very active in the Men’s Group and the Disciples Study Group. Marvin was a hard working, kind, loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed. Survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Naomi Children: Marlan Modrow and his wife, Linda of Outing, Minnesota Fredric Modrow and his wife, Jackie of Kennewick, Washington Marcia Larson and her husband, Roger of Berthoud, Colorado Lori Hintz and her husband, Cliff of Minot, ND Robert Modrow and his wife, Jeanette of Helena, Montana Fourteen Grandchildren: Michael Modrow, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Raeyna (Shane) Longtin, Collage Grove, Minnesota Heather (Chris) Morris, Pasco, Washington Nathan Modrow, Yakima, Washington Jennifer Larson, Kansas City, Missouri Zachariah (Shara) Larson, Las Vegas, Nevada Thaddeus (Heidi) Larson, Loveland, Colorado Jared (Katrina) Waltzer, Minot, ND Jason Waltzer, Bothell, Washington Sarah (Travis) Sponsel, Gardena, ND Jonathan (Aimee) Waltzer, Minot, ND Christy Modrow, Janae (Don) Grotvo, Colin Modrow, all of Helena, Montana Eleven Great Grandchildren Matthew, Christopher and Shawna Modrow Jordan Longtin Elias and Camdyn Morris Willem, Benjamin and Alexander Larson Abigail and McKenzie Grotvo Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Evelyn Modrow, brother, Guy Modrow and an infant brother.
