Rachel Leah Young was born January 1, 1916 at Crow Hill, North Dakota, the daughter of George and Adele (Langer) Young. She was reared and educated in the Fort Totten area, attended the Fort Totten Government Boarding School. She also attended the Bismarck Indian Boarding School. Rachel was united in marriage to Harry Robert Charboneau on November 1, 1941 at Minnewaukan, ND. They established their home in Cheyenne Agency, South Dakota. Rachel devoted herself to caring for her husband and raising her family. The family moved to Eagle Butte, South Dakota in 1959. After Harry died in 1963, Rachel moved to Pierre, South Dakota. In 1966, Rachel moved to Rapid City, South Dakota to be closer to her daughter. Rachel would continue to make her home close to family and moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1985 where she made her home for over 21 years.
Rachel was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City and became a very active member in the Blue Army.
Just as she so lovingly had raised her own children, Rachel was a loving and caring grandmother and played a vital role in raising her grandchildren. She exemplified the Catholic faith and as a “Prayer Warrior” she prayed fervently that she be a role model to her grandchildren and instill values of faith, hope and love.
May Rachel rest in God’s peace.
