Mayvis E. Fering (1921 – 2006) Mayvis Fering, 84, of Devils Lake, ND died on Wednesday, November 8, 2006, at the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake, ND. Mayvis was born December 26, 1921, at Esmond, ND, the daughter of Charley and Clara (Nielsen) Lunde. She grew up in Esmond and became an elementary school teacher after attending Mayville State College. During World War II, she moved to San Francisco and served as one of the many “Rosie the Riveters”. After the war she returned to teach school in Esmond, ND and later in Great Falls, MT. She married Lyle O. Fering on August 5, 1949. Mayvis and Lyle lived in Esmond until 1957, when they moved to Crookston, MN. In addition to raising her two children, Mayvis worked for Polk County Social Services. The family moved to the Devils Lake area in 1968. Mayvis then taught for several years in the elementary school at Warwick, ND. Mayvis’ sincere and deep love of children served her well as a teacher. She recognized and appreciated the unique qualities in each of her students. For many years she gave freely of her time to tutor disadvantaged students. She was very compassionate and had a generous and loving spirit. She was always quick to offer help and assistance to anyone in need. She will be missed deeply by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Lyle Fering of Devils Lake, ND; son Mark (Monica) Fering of Cary, NC; daughter Kristen Pine of Englewood, CO; grandchildren Kaia (Thomas) Lee; Tampa FL; Sara (Slater) Bayliss, Tallahassee, FL; Louis Pine, Las Vegas, NV; John (Cassie) Fering of Brentwood, MO; and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers; Nordan, Ove, and Lynn Lunde and sister, Avis. Memorial Service: There will be a memorial service at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, ND on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Memorials may be directed to the Head Start Program in Devils Lake in Mayvis' memory.
