Katherine Lemer was born on August 19, 1914 to Louis and Frances (Ehretsmann) Lemer at the home farm north of Drake, ND. She was the 3rd child of 7 children and was the oldest girl. She grew up on the family farm and went to school in McHenry County. Being the oldest girl, she had many responsibilities, which meant staying home from school to help with family chores, such as; washing clothes, milking, helping get hay into the barn for winter, making meals, baking, hauling water and baby sitting when the folks were gone. When she was 15 she went to Minot and worked as a cook at St. Joseph’s Hospital. In 1936, she came to Devils Lake and worked at Mercy Hospital. During that time, she met her husband, Walter Julius Kuntz. They were united in marriage on October 1, 1941 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They became the parents of six children. Walter died on April 11, 1949. Katherine continued living and working in Devils Lake, raising her children on her own. She was currently residing at the Good Samaritan Center.
Katherine was involved with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters, St. Rita’s Circle and was a past Mother of the Year. She enjoyed playing Bingo, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune and was a faithful Minnesota Twins fan.
