Jeremiah S. Santos, 21, a Corporal with the United States Army, of Devils Lake died on June 15, 2006 in a roadside bomb attack outside Baghdad, Iraq. A Memorial Service for Jeremiah will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Devils Lake with Rev. Bruce Dick officiating. Funeral Services for Corporal Jeremiah Santos were held on Monday, June 26, 2006 at Bonham Brothers and Stewart Mortuary in Ramona, California, with burial and military honors at the Nuevo Memory Gardens also in Ramona. Jeremiah Soham Santos was born on April 6, 1985 in San Diego, California, the son of Shannon Santos and Laurie (DuCharme) McGlone. He attended elementary school in Santee and Escondido, California and then attended Central Middle School and Devils Lake High School after moving to North Dakota. He was involved in ROTC, was a member of the Color Guard and also very involved in his church, Bethel Evangelical Free. He joined Job Corps in Minot and also attended Minot State University. On April 1, 2004, Jeremiah enlisted in the United States Army. He attended Basic and Advanced Training at Fort Benning, Georgia and later went to Fort Hood, Texas and was assigned to Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, then Charlie Company and finally Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment where he served in various infantryman positions including Bradley Fighting Vehicle Driver, SAW Gunner and Team Leader. Corporal Santos was then deployed to combat with his unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom November of 2005 in Kalsu, Iraq. He was married to Jessica (Tyner) in September of 2004. In his military career, Corporal Santos exemplified himself as a leader of Soldiers. He always led from the front and took any challenge head on. He was a courageous, humorous, and intelligent man whose caring leadership style infected the lives of all who came in contact with him. He made the ultimate sacrifice for his country while leading his men on the battlefield. Corporal Santos was awarded the Purple Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Basic Marksmanship Qualification Badge. As a youngster, Jeremiah was actively involved with the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association with his Nana and Gramps Warnock. After moving to Devils Lake, Jeremiah was very involved in the youth group of his church. When on leave in March of 2006, Jeremiah spoke to the members of his church and the youth of the area on his belief in God and convictions of his service in the Army and to the Iraqi people. His smile was never-ending, and his love for family and friends undying and dedication to his country will forever be remembered by all.
