Myrtle I. Charon, 99 of Devils Lake, ND died early Thursday morning, October 14, 2010 at her son Larry’s home in Cooperstown, ND.
Funeral Services for Myrtle will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Devils Lake on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Don Reynolds will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Time of Sharing at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
Myrtle Irene Strand Charon was born Jan 24, 1911 to Peter Goodwin and Grace Myrtle (Hill) Strand. They lived northwest of Edmore, ND in Prospect Township. Due to her mother’s death she was raised by her grandmother and grandfather Martin and Susan (Hill) Krogfoss. She grew up and attended school in Prospect Township. This is where she learned to work and did work hard.
On June 7, 1929 she married Palmer Charon in Devils Lake. They started farming in Cato Township during the "dirty thirties". They bought their own farm in Triumph Township in 1940. They gave birth to 3 sons Hugh, Larry and Allen. They moved to Lawton in 1956. Myrtle cooked at the school and later ran a restaurant.
In 1962 she and Palmer were offered jobs at the Lake Region Lutheran Home in Devils Lake. She provided a wide range of activities along with her hugs and smiles. She retired in 1985. Myrtle continued to live in Devils Lake until May 2010 when Larry and Doris moved her from Heartland Care Center to care for her in their home in Cooperstown, ND until her death on October 14, 2010.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer on February 8, 1992; son Hugh; a brother Goodwin and 2 half brothers-Leland and Harvey Strand of Washington State.
She is survived by two sons Larry (Doris) Charon of Cooperstown, ND and Allen (Sandy) Charon of Mesa, Az and a daughter in law, Lovina Charon of Lawton, ND; Ten Grandchildren and Twelve Great Grandchildren; 4 half sisters, Mrs. Ted (Hazel) McKelvey, Mrs. Bob (Clara) Russell, Mrs. Elvira Blaine, all of Spokane, Wash and Mrs. Ella Newton of Tacoma, Wash.
