Maxine L. Foss, 70 of St. Michael, ND died on Monday, August 21, 2006 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Mass of Christian Burial for Maxine will be held on Friday, August 25, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St. Michael. Fr. Paul Ruge will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2006 from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. all at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Serving as Active Casket Bearers for Maxine will be Justin McCaslin, Winfield Chaske, Jr., Brian Alberts, Rock Baer, Garrett Allery and Frank Lohnes Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rosalie Baer, Frank and Myra Lohnes, Juliann Smith, Margie Little, Theresa L. Allery, Carl and Janice McKay, Mike and Pauline Greywater, Cora and Brett Tiger, Harriet Skye, Ada RedHorse, Winona Fox, Cissy McKay, Marlene Anderson, Margaret Garfield, Winfield Chaske Sr, Joe Alberts Sr, Jeannie Cavanaugh, Christine Alex, Lorraine Greybear, and Lillian Mudgett. Maxine Louise was born on May 27, 1936 at Fort Totten, ND to Michael Cavanaugh and Louise Good Soldier. At the age of six, she went to live with her adoptive parents, Julia and John Anderson and they made their home at St. Michael. She attended the St. Michael Mission School, the Boarding School at Marty, South Dakota and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Devils Lake in the class of 1955. She moved to California and made her home there for 16 years. She married Burl McCaslin and they had two sons, Darrell and Burl Jr. While living in California she worked in an electronics factory. She returned to North Dakota and was united in marriage to Lennis Foss in 1976 in Mandan, ND and to this union was born their daughter, Tiffaney. They established their home in Mandan and Maxine worked at several jobs, including the Driver’s License Bureau in Bismarck and in the Probation Department of the State Penitentiary. She later moved back to the Spirit Lake Nation and worked for the tribe, establishing their License Plate Program. She worked as a Mental Health Technician for Indian Health Services until retiring in 1999. Maxine also lived and worked for a short time in Denver, Colorado. Maxine loved adventure and loved to travel. But for Maxine, time spent with her dear grandchildren, family and friends brought her the most joy. Maxine is survived by her children: Darrell (Sherry) McCaslin of St. Joseph, Illinois Burl McCaslin Jr. of Fargo, ND Tiffaney (Winfield Jr.) Foss of St. Michael, ND Adopted Daughter: Mary Thompson also of St. Michael Grandchildren: Justin McCaslin, Darius Chaske, Collin Lennis Chaske and Special granddaughter, Arianna Caitlin Driver, Special grandson, Winfield (Toodles) Chaske III. Adopted Granddaughter: Jordan LaRock Nine Brothers and Sisters: Michael Cavanaugh Jr., Clifford Cavanaugh both of St. Michael Barbara (Carl) Walking Eagle, Crow Hill Dianne (Steven) Lohnes, Viola (Leo) Delorme, Loretta (Glen) Delorme, Cheryl (Al) Cavanaugh all of St. Michael, ND Judy (Dave) LaRocque, Belcourt, ND Bruno E. Cavanaugh of St. Michael Special Aunt; Virginia (Adrian) Foote of Parshall, ND Special Niece: Tanya Lohnes Special Friend: Bud Hall Many Nieces, Nephews and Cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; adoptive parents, Julia and John Anderson; grandson, Severn McCaslin; brothers, Marvin Anderson Sr. and Bruno F. “Softy” Cavanaugh; adopted sister, Bernadette Ankle; nephew, Marvin Anderson Jr.
