Clarence J. “Etancan” Longie, 71 of rural St. Michael, ND died on Sunday morning, June 25, 2006 at his home.
Services for Clarence will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Tekakwitha Center, St. Michael, ND. Fr. Charles Leute, O.P. will officiate. Military Honors will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6547.
Honorary Pallbearers for Clarence will be all of his loving nieces and nephews and his many dear friends.
Clarence Joseph Longie was born on May 30, 1935 at Fort Totten, ND the son of Clarence “Shorty” Dale and Frances (Cavanaugh) Longie. He was reared and educated in the Fort Totten area. In 1952, Clarence enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country for 21 years, during which he did two tours of duty in Vietnam.
Clarence was united in marriage to Catherine Rolland on April 13, 1963 in Sioux City, Iowa and to this union were born three children. Clarence continued in military service until retiring in 1974 and the family moved back to the St. Michael area.
Clarence held various jobs with the Spirit Lake Tribe as a BIA Police Officer, Facilities Manager and Fort Totten Housing as an inspector. He then was self-employed in Lawn Care and Snow Removal and later in Garbage Removal. Most recently he was a driver for Head Start.
Love of family, friends, and country told the story of Clarence Longie. He will be forever loved and forever in the hearts of all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Longie and Frances Olson; step-father, Oswald Olson; grandparents, Robert and Helen Cavanaugh; infant brother, Robert Dennis Longie; sister-in-law, Lucille Longie; uncles, Dennis Cavanaugh, Robert Cavanaugh, Frank MacDonald Sr., Alfred Cavanaugh and many nieces and nephews.
