Margaret Clara Schmidt was born in Noonan Township, rural Devils Lake, ND on April 12, 1919, the daughter of George and Florence (Rassmussen) Schmidt. She was reared and educated in Noonan Township, attending the Noonan Township School. Prior to her marriage, Margaret worked as a housekeeper for several farm homes in the area. Margaret was united in marriage to Fred Perkuhn on October 20, 1940 at Dresden, North Dakota. They established their home on the farm in Noonan Township where they lived, worked and raised their family. In 1975, they retired and moved to Devils Lake. While living on the farm, Margaret was employed at the Noonan School as a cook for many years and after moving to Devils Lake worked as a cook at the Good Samaritan Center for 20 years. Fred died on November 14, 1981.
Margaret was very active and involved in the Foster Grandparent Program for many years and was a dedicated volunteer for the RSVP for over 2o years. Her dedication to and love of family and children brought her to Memorial Day Care and Early Head Start where she spent many hours nurturing and rocking hundreds of babies through the years. Margaret was also a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and the Quilting Group.
