Wendelin “Windy” Bachmeier, 75 of Devils Lake, ND died peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 28, 2010 in the care of family and Mercy Hospice. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Peter Sharpe will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake and then visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Friday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Terry Thompson, Gary Kurtz, Julius Senger, Julius Schafer, Jon Besse, Dennis Windjue, Marv Schultz and Dale Benaszeski. Music will be provided by Peter A. Hager and JoDee Lagein. Reading the Scriptures will be Jolene Kostecki and Rita Volk. Wendelin “Windy” Bachmeier was born August 13, 1934 in Devils Lake, ND to Jack and Catherine (Schell) Bachmeier. He was raised in Noonan Township and attended school there. Windy worked on the family farm until entering the Army in 1955. After his honorable discharge in 1957, he returned to Devils Lake and married Anna Marie Jager. They established their home in Devils Lake where Windy owned and operated Bachmeier Transfer until retiring in 1985. Windy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and was a life member of the Devils Lake Elks Lodge. Windy was a faithful volunteer to the Devils Lake Fire Department Fishing Tournament each year and Windy also received a Certificate of Appreciation in 2001 from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his patriotism and assistance to veterans. Windy enjoyed softball, hunting, fishing, gardening and entertaining at his home. Windy is survived by his children; son, Jim and daughter, Laurie Ann (Damon) Feland all of Devils Lake; daughter-in-law, Mona Lisa Bachmeier of Max, ND; granddaughters, Samantha and Dalise Bachmeier also of Max, ND and Melinda (Dave) Elston, Devils Lake; great grandchildren, David and Shaylei Elston, Devils Lake and Jaydon Wills and Davyion Clemons of Max; brothers, Ralph (Alexis) Bachmeier of St. Paul, MN and Leonard (Marilyn) Bachmeier of Forest Lake, MN; sisters, Mary (Ed) Volk of Devils Lake and Evelyn Hager of Oakdale, MN; Many nieces and nephews and their families also survive. Windy was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Randy and Dale; grandson, Blake Bachmeier; brothers, Anton “Tony” Buchmeier, Ray Bachmeier and Bernard Bachmeier and sister, Kate Schiele.
