Leonard Lohnes, 82 of Devils Lake formerly of Lohnes Township departed this life on February 18, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake. A Wake for Leonard will be held at the Tekakwitha Center, St. Michael, ND on Monday, February 22, 2010 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial for Leonard will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Brian Moen celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in the spring. Military Honors will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6547. Serving as Active Pallbearers for Leonard will be Lane Adams Sr., Kenny Lohnes Jr., Anthony Lohnes, Jason Brown, Jamie Belgarde, Fabian Lohnes, Steven Lohnes and Dana Lohnes. Honorary Pallbearers will be Zachary Thompson, Cynthia PoorBear, George Cavanaugh, Jane Lamrose, Raymond Sherman, Jimmy Greene, Larry Greene, Clarence Houle, Michael “Bugs” Thompson, Curtis Posey Sr., Sandra Miller, Trent Anderson, Stacy DuBois Sr., Ambrose “Buddy” Longie, Bruce McKay, Sandra DeMarce, Francis “Frenchy” Brown, Gerald and Lila Vanette, Good Samaritan Home Staff, all of Leonard’s nieces and nephews and any of Leonard’s friends we may have forgotten. Leonard Lohnes, nickname “The Hitman” was born May 4, 1927 to James and Emma (Alberts) Lohnes in the Lohnes Township, Benson County, North Dakota. Leonard was the grandson of Chief Waanatan. Leonard departed this life on February 18, 2010. Jim and Emma and their family made their home on the East end of the Spirit Lake Reservation, otherwise known as the Lohnes Township. Leonard attended the Little Flower School at St. Michael. In the fall of 1947, Leonard enlisted in the United States Army and served as a medic. In January of 1949,Leonard was united in marriage to Mary Plante. In November of 1949 their oldest daughter, Linda was born. Leonard and Mary returned to St. Michael where they resided until 1956 when they moved to Jamestown, ND where Leonard was employed at the State Hospital. Together, Leonard and Mary had five daughters Linda, Lois, Lila, Judy and Bonnie all of Minneapolis, MN. Leonard was a jack of all trades and he enjoyed gardening, cleaning and cooking. Leonard was also known for his carpentry work. Leonard was easy going and got along with everyone and anyone. He also enjoyed telling tall tales and a good drink now and then. Leonard was known by other nicknames such as “Jigs” and “Bologna”. Leonard will be deeply missed by his many family and friends. Leonard is survived by his daughters, Linda, Lila, Lois and Judy Lohnes, Bonnie Lohnes Lorenz, Lisa Lohnes and Louella Paul and son, Leonard Lohnes Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Emma; sisters, Mary Jane McKay, Mary King, Clemence Herman, Marie LaCroix and Emmaline Lohnes and brothers, James Lohnes Jr., Joe, Phillip, George, Richard and Donny Lohnes.
