Dorothy E. Cuthbert, 88, of Devils Lake, formerly of Grafton, ND, died on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake, in the loving care of her family and Mercy Hospice. Funeral Services for Dorothy will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake, with Rev. Reuben Schnaidt, Pastor of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Devils Lake, officiating. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Friday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Graveside Services will be held at the Grafton City Cemetery, Grafton, ND on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Honorary Bearers will be Dorothy’s great-grandsons, Aiden and Zachary Graber and close family friend, Gary Lorinser. Casket Bearers will be Dorothy’s grandsons, Kelly Graber and Craig Cuthbert, her granddaughter's husband, Will Geddes, and Dorothy’s nephews, Michael Johnson, Tim Johnson, Gerald Bryn, Jason Henke and Al Herda. Music will be provided by Donovan Foughty and Sarah Nicla,vocalists and Lynda Pearson, organist Dorothy Evelyn, the loving daughter of William and Gunda (Bergeth) Benson, Sr., was born on February 6, 1922 at Ramsey, ND. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake. She attended school in the Filmore, ND area and after the family moved to the Lake Region area, she attended Devils Lake Central High School, graduating with the class of 1940. After graduating, she and her sister June worked on the family farm until her marriage to Frederic “Bud” Cuthbert on November 15, 1942, at the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Devils Lake. They established their home in Devils Lake for a short time until Fred enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Texas. Dorothy lived in Texas until Fred went overseas to serve in WWII. She then returned to Devils Lake and worked for Majestic Dry Cleaners. After his discharge, they moved to Minneapolis, where Fred attended the University of Minnesota Dental School and Dorothy was employed at the University of Minnesota as a secretary. After graduating, Fred went into private practice in Grafton, ND, where they lived, worked and raised their family there for many years. Dorothy served as the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of the Grafton State School for over 20 years. Dorothy continued to make Grafton her home after the death of Fred on July 24, 1982, until moving to Devils Lake in 1994 to be closer to family. In April of 2006, she moved to the Heartland Care Center. While living in Grafton, Dorothy was very active in St. James Episcopal Church and was also very active in the community and other service organizations, including serving as Past President of each of the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Eagles Auxiliary, and enjoyed being a member of the local Homemakers Club and Bridge Club. Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother and family was her priority. As a family, they enjoyed many rounds of golf on the local course and Dorothy also enjoyed curling, bowling and bridge. She was a woman of many talents, including being an excellent seamstress and she always kept herself busy with a variety of projects. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining very much. We shall have the love of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt in our hearts and our memories forever. May she now rest in God’s peace. Dorothy is survived by her children Sheryl and her husband Jim Moe of Devils Lake, John Cuthbert and his wife Debra of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and James Cuthbert of Fargo; daughter-in-law, Ruth Cuthbert of Sparks, Nevada; grandchildren, Craig Cuthbert and Kristen (Will) Geddes also of Sparks and Kelly (Autumn) Graber of Sabin, MN; great-grandsons, Aiden and Zachary Graber; brother, Richard (Donnis) Benson of Kalispell, Montana; sisters, Sharon Henke of Devils Lake, Grace (Jerome) Johnson of Fosston, MN and Yvonne (Charles) Woody of Gilbert, Arizona; sisters-in-law Joyce Benson of Moorhead, MN and Dorothy Chipault of Woodside, CA. Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frederic; son, Frederic Cuthbert Jr. on April 15, 2008; sisters, Alice Lorenson, Avis Anderson, Ethel Herda, Shirley Soper and June Bryn; brothers, William Benson Jr. and William Raymond Benson in infancy.
