Gabriel E. Smith Jr., “Wambdi-Sha” (Red Eagle), age 26 died on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at Fort Totten, ND. Mass of Christian Burial for Gabriel will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St. Michael, ND. Fr. Paul Ruge will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. The Wake and Rosary service will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at St. Michael’s Recreation Center beginning at 5:00 p.m. with the Rosary and Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. The Procession to St. Michael’s Recreation Center will leave on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. from the Wal-Mart Parking lot. Serving as Casket Bearers for Gabriel will be Gabe Shaw, Forrest Weber, Waylon Shaw, Chad Poitra Sr., Geoffrey Lambert, Troy Woods Jr., Jeremy DeMarce, Marcus Lambert and Joe Cavanaugh. Honorary Pallbearers will be All of Gabe’s family, relatives and friends. Spirit Lake Nation Drum Group will provide music. Gabriel Edward Smith Jr. was born on February 9, 1980 at Devils Lake, ND the son of Gabriel E. and Jeanette (Herald) Smith, Sr. He attended grades K-11 at Devils Lake and graduated from Four Winds High School. He played on the Devils Lake Football Team and wrestling team and also was a member of the choir. While at Four Winds he was very active in many school activities and sports and was awarded for outstanding play on the volleyball team. After high school, Gabe attended United Tribes Technical College at Bismarck. He returned to Fort Totten and worked at Sioux Manufacturing where he was employed at the time of his death. Gabe was very eager to learn more about the Traditional Ways and had begun to sing with some of the drum groups. He especially loved spending time with his cousins. Gabe always had a smile for everyone he met and had many dear friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Gabriel is survived by his mother, Jeanette Herald, St. Michael Sisters: Janel Herald, Devils Lake Denise (Chad) Poitra, Belcourt Lorinda DeMarce Cali DeMarce both of St Michael Brothers: Dennis (Michelle) Poni-Cappo, Jr., Warwick Jarrett Smith Sr., Fort Totten Gabriel Shaw, Tokio, ND William DeMarce, Devils Lake Tim DeMarce, Jr. also of Devils Lake Grandparents and Godparents: Jim and Melinda Thompson Many Nieces, Nephews, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his father; son, Jonathan Smith; grandfathers, William Herald and Simon Smith; grandmother, Sarah Young Smith; uncles, Joseph Smith and Leonard DuMarce; aunt, Florine Smith.
