Laverne Agnes Fox, (Ree Woman) was born on September 19, 1959 to Winona Alberts and Laidman Fox Sr. in Devils Lake, ND. She left to the Spirit World on Sunday, August 22, 2010 in Fargo, ND. Laverne attended Fort Totten Community School and graduated with the class of 1977. She was a member of the Pow-Wow club, Rodeo Club, Yearbook, Paper and Pep Club. While in the Rodeo Club, she was a barrel racer. She was crowned the Fort Totten Days Princess in 1978. Laverne later married Benjamin GoodBird III and from this union she had 5 children. Dusti GoodBird, Benjamin Brooks GoodBird, Nevada GoodBird, Joseph GoodBird and Latoya GoodBird. Laverne was a Champion Jingle Dress Dancer and danced in the pow-wow scene of Thunder Heart. She loved to bead and make fry bread. Laverne enjoyed teaching her grandchildren the traditional ways, and always had a good story to tell. She will be forever in our hearts. Laverne is survived by her mother, Winona Fox; canine son, Junior; daughters, Dusti GoodBird and Latoya (Shanon) GoodBird; sons, Brooks (Lila) GoodBird and Nevada (Mercede) GoodBird; grandchildren, Shandiin, Nadean, Dylane GoodBird, Militia Dogskin, Winona Rising Sun, Yana and Tanski GoodBird, Sierra and Maya GoodBird and Jordain Smith; adopted daughters, Cequoia Charging, Candace Smith and Amanda Smith; sisters, Lenore White Lightning, Lavonne Alberts, Lynda Stricker, Leann Fox and LaDonna Fox all of Fort Totten; brothers, Laidman Fox Jr. of Bismarck, ND, Leonard Fox of Fort Totten and Lee Allen Fox also of Bismarck; adopted brother, Paul Henry Cavanaugh; special friend, Nathaniel IronRoad. Laverne was preceded in death by her father, Laidman Fox Sr.; son, Joseph GoodBird; sister, Lynn Spotted Wolf; grandson, Carson GoodBird; nephews, Jeff Strait, Justin Strait, Devon Fox and Eldon Spotted Wolf Jr.; grandparents, Joseph and Susie Fox and George and Alvina Alberts. Serving as Casket Bearers for Laverne will be Jonathan RedOwl, Greg Plante, Will Demarce, Benny Mudgett, Austin Smith, Tyrel Alberts, Joe Azure and Shane Ramsey. Honorary Bearers will be Duanna RedElk, Diane DeRosiers, Lori O’Berry, Donna Morgan, Blue Thunder family, Uli Fox, Neva Whiteshield, Sandra Miller, Jane Lamrose, Tammy Robinson, Becky Longie, Becky TwoHearts, Lori Alberts and Daughters, Nancy Andrews, Marge Brown, Cora Tiger, Myra Pearson, Cheryle Cloud, Brooks GoodIron, Tammy Moore, Anita Moore, Sam Moore, Rose Merrick, Melchoir Mudgett, Markie Mudgett, Melvin Greybear Jr., Bev LaBelle, Tim Demarce, Caroline and Christopher Nelson, Cory Shaw, Andrew Shaw Sr., Onna Littlewind and family, Violet and Calvin Smith, Calvin “Beaver” Campbell, Delrae Smith, Alvin Spotted Elk, Aljoe Spotted Elk, Jimmy Smith, Alice Jetty and Donna Rae Jackson. Music will be provided by the Drum Groups, YellowFace Drum, Prairie Island and Dakota Express and all others wishing to share their music. The Wake for Laverne will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at the Fort Totten Recreation Center beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. also at the Fort Totten Recreation Center with burial in the St. Thomas Presbyterian Cemetery, Crow Hill, ND. The officiating Spiritual Leaders are JR Fox, Elk Looking Perkins and Paul Moran. The procession to the Fort Totten Recreation Center will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday from Wal-Mart.
