Marie Laturnus

Marie Laturnus, 85 of Devils Lake formerly of Cando, ND died early Saturday morning, November 17, 2007 at Heartland Care Center with her loving family at her bedside. Mass of Christian Burial for Marie will be on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Fr. Dale Kinzler celebrating the Mass. Graveside Services will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Cando on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Active Casket Bearers will be Jason Ostwald, Thomas Laturnus Jr., Brady Anderson, Chris Moore, Thomas Laturnus Sr., and Ron Biberdorf. Honorary Bearers will be Marie’s many dear friends and neighbors. Music will be provided by Peter A. Hager, soloist and JoDee Lagein, organist. Reading the Scriptures: Betty Bachmeier Gift Bearers will be Mary Ann and Rick Ginther Eulogy will be done by Dennis Gibson Marie was born on March 17, 1922, the daughter of John and Mary Eva (Keller) Selensky at Selz, ND where she was reared and educated. She worked for a time in Esmond and Minnewaukan, ND. She later moved to Devils Lake and worked at the Colonial Hotel and the Great Northern Hotel. Marie was united in marriage to Fred S. Laturnus on April 9, 1947 at Selz. They established their home on a farm at rural Cando. This is where they would live, work and raise their family through the years. In 1993 they retired and moved to Devils Lake. Fred died on March 25, 2004. Marie was a former member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Christian Women at Cando. After moving to Devils Lake she and Fred were members of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Marie enjoyed a good game of cards, croqueting, gardening and canning and sharing her produce. Marie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her families’ needs were always her priority and she loved to embellish them with delicious homemade bread and other wonderful goodies. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and treasured each day she was able to share with them on this earth. Now may she rest in God’s peace. Marie is survived by her loving family Sons and Daughters-In-Law: James Laturnus, Grand Forks Simon and Donna Laturnus, Cando Thomas and Betty Laturnus, Sr. also Grand Forks Daughters and Sons-In-Law: Dianne and Dennis Gibson, Devils Lake Donna and Kevin Anderson of Leeds, ND Six Grandchildren: Sharon (Chris) Moore, Jason (Vicki) Ostwald, Thomas Laturnus Jr., Tanya (Peter) Nelson, Michael (Trish) Gibson and Brady Anderson. Five Great Grandchildren: Meagan Gibson, Brittany Ostwald, Andrew Ostwald, Madisyn Marie Gibson and Zachary Paul Gibson. Brothers and Sisters-In-Law: Tony and Florence Selensky, Anaconda, Montana Frank and Rose Selensky, Harvey, ND Sisters and Brothers-In-Law: Eva and Bill Vetter, Minot, ND Barbara Kline, Everett, Washington Helen and Casmier Hoffert, Esmond, ND Angie Golembeck of St. Cloud, Minnesota Many nieces, nephews and their families and many dear brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; brothers, Rochus and Raymond Selensky; sisters, Katie Selensky and Rose Hoffert.
