Derrick Joseph Lohnes, “Wambdi Duta” (Red Eagle), age 26, passed away early Sunday morning on May 31, 2009.
A Wake and Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Recreation Center, St. Michael, ND.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Derrick will be on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Fr. Brian Moen will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.
Derrick Joseph born October 1, 1982 to David “Red” Lohnes Sr. and Jeannie (Davis) Lohnes at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake. Derrick attended Head Start in Fort Totten, Kindergarten to 4th grade at Prairie View, 5th-8th grade at Devils Lake Middle School and then Devils Lake High School. He received his GED at Little Hoop Community College in 2002. Derrick has 2 children he loved very much, Jaylen Joseph Lohnes (Schaefer) and Kaylie Ann Lohnes (Schaefer).
Derrick was employed at the Spirit Lake EPA. He worked at the Spirit Lake Casino for 2 years and also at Sioux Manufacturing for a time.
Derrick was an outdoorsman and enjoyed the seasons. He was very into hunting, fishing and ice fishing, always competing with his brothers and friends to get the biggest “monster”. He also enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He liked all kinds of music and watching favorite movies. Derrick and his brother, Erik would take trips to casinos and have a good time playing blackjack and slots and visiting relatives along the way. He was also into the online video game world of Final Fantasy 11 where he and Erik each had a character and played alongside each other daily for the last 4 years.
He loved classic cars and learning carpentry from his father at an early age, cooking, grilling and watching his favorite sport teams with friends. He always had a smile for everyone and had a way to make you feel happy.
Derrick is survived by his parents, David Sr. and Jeannie Lohnes of St. Michael, ND; Children, son, Jaylen Joseph Lohnes (Schafer) and daughter, Kaylie Ann Lohnes (Schaefer) both of Devils Lake; Brothers, David Lohnes Jr. of Neopit, Wisconsin, Douglas Lohnes and Anita Black of Devils Lake, Daniel and Ruby Lohnes of St. Michael, Dana Lohnes and Tasha Robinson of Devils Lake and Erik Lohnes also St. Michael; Sisters, Lisa and Vince Romero of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Pam and Greg Holy Bull of Devils Lake; Grandmother, Florence (Azure) Davis of Belcourt, ND and many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
Derrick was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elmer Davis Sr., Aaron Lohnes, Florence (Morin) Lohnes;
great grandparents, Robert and Mary Jane Davis and nephew, Adrian Lohnes.
Serving as Casket Bearers for Derrick will be Dusty Lohnes, Lyle Davis, Michael Davis, Tyler Davis, Kyle LeBeau, Blaine Davis, Wayne Davis Jr. and John Schroeder.
