Kathleen "Kate" Swanson

Kathleen “Kate” Swanson, 95 of Devils Lake died on Sunday, July 5, 2009 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Funeral Services for Kate will be held on Friday, July 10, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with burial in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of service. Serving as Casket Bearers for Kathleen will be her grandsons, Dave LaDouceur, Jeff LaDouceur, Greg LaDouceur, Shawn McMillan and nephews, Allen Borstad and Ray Bertsch. Kathleen Duchscher was born August 6, 1913, the daughter of Philip Jacob and Theresa (Mattern) Duchscher in Knox, ND. She was raised at Leeds, ND and attended school in York, ND. She married Edward McMillan April 23, 1932. The couple lived in Leeds, ND, later moving to Minnewaukan, ND. She married Alvin Swanson June 3, 1942. They lived in Devils Lake where Kathleen was employed at the Lakeside Café for many years and at the Lake Region Lutheran Home for 10 years before retiring in 1975. Alvin passed away on March 4, 1991. Kathleen was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Kathleen enjoyed reading, collecting dishes and antiques, going to auction sales and holding her own yard sales. Kathleen is survived by a son, Robert (Doris) McMillan, Grand Forks, ND; daughters, Barbara Lezon, Seattle, WA; Mary (Chuck) Wallem, Longview, WA; and Joyce (Russell) LaDouceur, Grand Forks, ND; 19 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Yvonne McMillan and Marlys “Dolly” Uhrich; one granddaughter, Jackie Uhrich; one great granddaughter, Katie West; 5 brothers; and 2 sisters.
