Antoine Walking Eagle, “SunKaKan Duta” (Red Horse) 94 a life time resident of Crow Hill, died early Thursday morning, July 19, 2007 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, ND with all of his children, grand children and great grandchildren by his side.
Mass of Christian Burial for Antoine will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten. Fr. Charles Leute O.P. will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in the Walking Eagle Family Plot, rural Crow Hill.
The Wake Service will be held at the Crow Hill Recreation Center on Monday, July 23, 2007 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with the Rosary at 8:00 p.m.
Serving as Casket Bearers will be Antoine’s Grandsons, Ricky Walking Eagle, Darren Walking Eagle, Curtis Walking Eagle, Caleb Walking Eagle, Curren Walking Eagle, Antonio Eagleman, Duran Jensen, Richard Luger Jr., Neil Luger, Carl Walking Eagle Jr., Ron Walking Eagle Jr., Loren Walking Eagle, Glen Walking Eagle, Royce McKay, Benny Wayne Rolland, William Walking Eagle and LeMar Butts.
Honorary Bearers will be the Staff of the New Rockford Lutheran Home, Demus McDonald, Joe Herman, Solomon Sherman, Elmer Brown, Marlene Anderson, Joseph and Clarice Lawrence Sr., Richard Luger Sr., Dana Yankton, Sr., Myron A. Foote, Allie Walking Eagle, Spirit Lake Elders and all of Antoine’s dear family, friends and relatives.

Antoine was born on March 17, 1913 in Crow Hill, ND, to Caleb Smith and Agnes (RedHorse) Walking Eagle. He lived his younger years in Brockton, Montana with his mother and step father, Marion Walking Eagle. They moved back home to Crow Hill where Antoine was united in marriage to Grace Shaw on February 11, 1941 in Minnewaukan, ND. They made their home in Fort Totten and Crow Hill areas. Grace died on October 9, 1996.
He was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and was also a lifetime member of the Miraculous Medal Association.
Antoine worked various jobs during his life which included the Garrison Diversion Project and as a farm laborer in this area. Antoine believed in his culture and really enjoyed the songs and moccasin games he played with his friends.

Antoine was preceded in death by his parents, Caleb Smith, Agnes (RedHorse) Walking Eagle and step father, Marion Walking Eagle; wife, Grace; sons, Curtis and Glen Walking Eagle; daughter, Lisa Walking Eagle; grandsons, William Kazena Jr. and Kermit Walking Eagle Jr.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Jean (Woods) Shaw; brothers, Clarence and Leo Walking Eagle and Matthew Gill; sisters, Helen Rattling Thunder and Theresa (Walking Eagle) McKay.
