Michael Allen was born in Devils Lake on December 18, 1942, the son of Simon and Sara (Young) Smith. He grew up in the Tokio area and attended school at St. Michael’s Mission School, Flandreau, South Dakota and Maddock. He later received certification as a carpenter at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck.
Michael spent most of his early years traveling and working as a welder and carpenter in many states across the country, including Oregon, California, South Dakota, Illinois, working in engineering and iron and steel and in Washington where he went to welding school and worked in a hammer factory. He moved back to North Dakota and for the past 20 years has made his home closer to family.
Michael was a “people person” and loved spending time with his friends and family. He also enjoyed putting his carpentry and mechanical skills to use in many of his building projects and just “tinkering” around the house and working on vehicles for his friends and family.
