Chief Warrant Officer III, Herby Kim Barstad, 52, of Devils Lake, ND died July 7, 2007 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Funeral Services for Kim will be on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. in Peace Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Rev. Rafe Allison officiating. Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, July 12, at 3:00 p.m. in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Military honors accorded by ND National Guard Company 3662. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, with the family present between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Wednesday will be in the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Serving as Honorary Bearers will be members of the 3662nd Maintenance Company, North Dakota Army National Guard. Casket Bearers for Kim will be Tim Reiner, Tim Rutten, Rick Thomas, Ed Johnson, Dennis Hansen, Gary Fagerlund and Ted Anderson. Music will be provided by Donovan Foughty, soloist and Brenda Swenseth, pianist Herby Kim Barstad was born in Devils Lake, ND on November 30, 1954, the son of Herby & Ruth (Moore) Barstad. He graduated in 1972 from Starkweather High School and attended Lake Region Community College graduating in 1975. On August 19, 1977 Kim was united in marriage to Brenda Schlieve in Devils Lake where they established their home. Kim joined the North Dakota National Guard in 1977 and on November 11, 1979 started at Camp Grafton as a member of the 3662nd Maintenance Company where he continued to serve his entire career. Kim was presently the supervisor for Allied Trades at the Combined Support Maintenance Shop. In addition to the numerous commendations he has earned, he will be posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Award. Kim was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge 1216, Lake Region Anglers and the 3662nd Maintenance Company, North Dakota Army National Guard. Kim enjoyed many pastimes, especially time with friends, hunting, fishing and restoring classic cars. Kim prided himself in keeping his yard well groomed and was a true “handyman” and was the “main carpenter” in all household projects. Kim is survived by his wife, Brenda; son, Justen Barstad and special friend Kay Eback of Bismarck, ND; daughter, Nicole Barstad and special friend Darren Wheeling of Brookings, SD; granddaughter, Emmery Wheeling; grandson, Myles Eback; brothers, Colin (Judy) Barstad of Woodlake-Warwick, ND; Dwight (Judy) Barstad of Colorado Springs, CO; Brent (Angie) Barstad of Prior Lake, MN; sisters, Cathy (Clayton) Henke of Devils Lake; Brenda (Rick) Schnaderbeck of Monte Vista, CO; mother-in-law & father-in-law, Tilford & Beverly Schlieve of Devils Lake; step-mother, Rose Barstad of Devils Lake, ND; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Michelle (Doug) Kupitz of Moorhead, MN; Tammy (Larry) Elshaug of Devils Lake, ND; Connie Regan of Devils Lake, ND; Todd Schlieve of East Grand Forks, MN and Terry (Julie) Schlieve of Devils Lake, ND; step sisters, Rita (Glen) Olson and Bonnie Hawley both of Devils Lake; aunts, Vid Ritter, of Langdon, ND; Helen Corbin of Portland, OR and Irene Shaw of Modesto, CA. 16 nieces and nephews, 12 great nieces and great nephews and cousins also survive. Preceded in death by parents, Herby and Ruth Barstad; infant daughter, Mikayla Barstad; infant brother, Donn Barstad; step-brother, Jim Hager
