Evelyn E. Janssen, 92 of Devils Lake formerly of Wood Lake, MN died on Sunday morning, July 8, 2007 at her home. Funeral Services for Evelyn will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Marvin Winstryg will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Wednesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Serving as Honorary Bearers will be R. Brag Mercil, Lee and Shirley Anderson, Robert and Irene Whitney, Helen Sharpe, Carol Schneider, Ruth Taylor, Laura Huber, Charlie and Marie Schumacher,Ray and Beverly Horne and Paul and Lois Lange. Casket Bearers for Evelyn will be Brad Horne, Travis Anderson, Arron Janssen, Dennis Anderson, Brian Houkom and Gary Lochow. Music will be provided by Mary Oehlke, soloist and Lynda Pearson, organist Evelyn Edna Carey was born in Wood Lake, Minnesota on February 22, 1915, the daughter of Mike and Elizabeth (Jensen) Carey. She was reared and educated in Wood Lake, attending Wood Lake High School. On June 4, 1939, Evelyn was united in marriage to Dayton C. Janssen at Wood Lake. They established their home in Graceville, Minnesota where they owned and operated the Red and White Grocery Store. They later moved to Crookston, MN and operated a Ben Franklin Store. In 1956, the family moved to Devils Lake and opened the Ben Franklin Store. Here they would live and work through the years. Evelyn and Dayton made their second home in Arizona at Apache Wells for many years. Dayton died on November 11, 2001. Evelyn was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Apache Wells 9 Hole Swingers and Good Neighbor Club at Western State Bank. Evelyn and Dayton loved to travel and as members of the Good Neighbor Club traveled to Alaska, East Coast and Canada and many short trips. Together, they also traveled to Hawaii and around the Panama Canal. After retirement, the Taylors, Schumachers and Janssens had many great fishing trips to Happy Lake, Canada. Evelyn also traveled to Europe with the International Peace Garden Music Camp group. Evelyn enjoyed golf and after she retired, she enjoyed having the time to play more golf. Evelyn devoted herself to her family and the family business where she could always be found at the check out counter at the Ben Franklin. Evelyn is survived by her loving family. Her daughter, Jean Janssen; grandson, Dan Janssen and his wife, Liz; great granddaughters, Anna and Catherine Janssen all of Devils Lake; sister, Helen Lokken of Hopkins, MN; sister-in-law, Delores Carey, Minneapolis; brother-in-law, Keith Janssen and his wife, Joyce of Williston; Evelyn’s very special family, Jay and Rose Janssen, Brandon, Jennifer and Janelle of Devils Lake-Evelyn has lived with them the past 3 years and they gave her very special care. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great great nieces and great great nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dayton; infant son, Dayton; brothers, Glen Carey and Harlen Carey and all of her aunts and uncles.
