Adolf, son of Albert and Elizabeth “Betsy” (Sjoberg) Bryn was born on the family farm, Grand Harbor Township, rural Devils Lake on May 27, 1913. He attended and graduated from the 8th grade at Bay School, located ¾ miles from the farm. He then attended Devils Lake Central High School and graduated in the class of 1930. He had hoped to play football in high school but had to help on the family farm and after graduating continued farming with his Dad, but now used a tractor and plow instead of horses. On November 18, 1939, Adolf was united in marriage to Signe A. Johnson at the Norway Lutheran Church, rural Devils Lake. In 1942, they purchased the former Fred Thomas farm which was just across the road from Adolf’s parents. Here Adolf and Signe lived, worked and raised their son, Gary making the farm their home for over 65 years. Adolf also continued to help his parents on the family farm for many years. Signe died on May 2, 2004.
Adolf was a baptized and confirmed member of the Norway Lutheran Church and after it closed became a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Adolf was instrumental in the renovation of the Norway Lutheran Church after it was used at the Retreat Center. He was also a member of the Sons of Norway and the Crop Improvement Association. He served on the Grand Harbor School Board-Bay School #1, the Grand Harbor Telephone Company and also served as the treasurer/clerk of Grand Harbor Township for over 50 years.
Adolf and Signe were partners in making lefse, Signe rolled and Adolf fried. Adolf also was quite talented in making flatbread. Of course, these and many other special treats were always on the table at the Bryn home and everyone was welcome anytime into their home.
Adolf, a true steward and lover of the land, never retired from farming. He was also very innovative and was one of the first to plant and harvest soybeans in the area, with his first crop being harvested in 1966.
