Nathan M. “Buck” Jones Sr., “Dowan Ohitika Hoksina” (Brave Singing Boy) age 62 of St. Michael, ND entered into the Spirit World on September 4, 2009 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND with his loving family at his side. A Wake Service will be held at St. Michael’s Recreation Center on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 beginning at 5:00 p.m. The procession to St. Michael’s Recreation Center will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday from the Wal-Mart Lot. Mass of Christian Burial for Nathan will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Fr. Brian Moen and Fr. Charles Leute, O.P. will celebrate the Mass and Nathan will be laid to rest in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Serving as Casket Bearers for Buck will be Nathan Jones Jr., Curtis Jones, Kermit Demarce, Lydell Jones, Richard Jackson, Toby GoodBird, Joe Garcia, Sheldon Black, Nate Dogskin and Victor “Lee” Jackson. Honorary Bearers will be, Roger (Brenda) Yankton, Kenny (Flo) Dunn, Vincent Shaw, Darwin Brown, Lois Leben, Myra Pearson, Sonta Dauphinais, Roger (Brenda) Brown, Carl Merrick, Demus McDonald, Corrine Brown, Yvonne Thompson, Calvin and Violet Smith, James and Cathy Yankton, Greg and Lavonne Feather, Glen Abraham, Vincent and Belva Greyhorn, Clifford Cavanaugh, Sam Merrick, Bill Black, Rita Jackson, Evan White, Dr. Mudireddy, Dr. Cheng, Verle Greywater, Ivan Blackcloud, Danny Seaboy, Solomon Sherman, Buddy Longie, Winfield Chaske, John and Ramona Chaske, Justine McDonald, William and Debra Cavanaugh, Frank and Mary Lovejoy and Preston Demarce. Music will be provided by Tony and Vina McDonald, Loretta Stensland and Lake Region Singers Buck Jones was born November 27, 1946 at Fort Totten, ND the son of the late Margaret Jones and Raymond BrownShield. He was raised in the St. Michael area and attended school at Little Flower Elementary in St. Michael, Wahpeton Indian School and graduated from the 8th grade at Calvary Square Boarding School in Fort Totten. He later received his GED from the Little Hoop Adult Learning Center in Fort Totten. In 1968, he married the love of his life, Cecelia Feather Mazakohomni and they made their home in St. Michael until 1969 when they moved to Chicago, Illinois where he attended trade school. They returned to the St. Michael area, until 1975 when they moved to Garden Grove, California on the Relocation Program. Again returning home until 1989 when he moved his family to United Tribes, Bismarck where he received his certificate for welding. In 1990 after graduating he moved his family back to St. Michael where they have since made their home and raised their children and grandchildren. Nathan has worked various jobs throughout the years. He was one of the first employees hired at Sioux Manufacturing Corporation; he worked for the CHR Program, was director for the food distribution program, was a bus driver and a teacher’s aide for the Head Start Program in St. Michael. He was a security guard for the Spirit Lake Casino and was also a Bingo Caller for the Casino, until ill health forced him to retire. Nathan enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren. He had many friends at home and throughout the pow-wow country. He loved to make people laugh and always had a joke to tell. In his younger years, he was a Fancy Dancer and later became a Traditional Dancer. He was an announcer at pow-wows and loved to travel. He raised his children to be singers and dancers too. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Nathan is survived by is loving wife of 41 years, Cecelia Jones; Sons: Nathan “Baby Buck” Jones Jr., Curtis “Smokey” Jones, Lydell Jones and Kermit Demarce all of St. Michael; Daughters: Shannon (Kenny) Demarce, Wood Lake, ND, Clarice “Maggie” Jones and Tammy Jones both of St. Michael; Brothers: Solomon “Buddy” (Claudette) Ross of Fort Totten, Ed Brownshield, Oberon, ND and Joseph (Marge) Brown Jr., Warwick, ND; Sisters: Diane Jackson, Doris Longie both St. Michael. Lorna Brownshield, Devils Lake and Charlene Farrow, Minot, ND; Grandchildren he raised: Crystal BlueShield, Trevor Jones, Kylie Jones and Elizabeth Jones all St. Michael; Adopted Sons: Tyson Merrick and Kenny Merrick Jr. both of Connecticut; Adopted Brothers: Carl Merrick and Sam Merrick; Adopted family: Myra Pearson, Cheryl GoodIron, Betty Lou Smith, Terry Alex and Terry Morgan; Adopted Daughters: Rainy Anderson, Kami Birdhorse and Kelly Birdhorse; Adopted Sisters: Yvonne Thompson, Corrine Brown and Violet Smith; Grandchildren: Kaylene Jones, Toby GoodBird, Augustine GoodBird, Ira White, Simone White, Simona White, Skylee Jones, Jaden Jones, Currean Jones, Tori Jones, Daniel Jones, Nathanya Jones, Miranda Jones, Ricki Jones, Jenny Jones, Gage Jones, Gabby Jones and Joseph Demarce. Great Grandchildren: Tashina BlueShield, Tristen BlueShield, Reginal Black and Aiden GoodBird; Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Nathan was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Jones; mother, Margaret Jones; father, Raymond BrownShield; brother, Jerome Bear; sister, Gloria BrownShield, life long brothers and friends, Kenny Merrick Sr. and Elmer White Jr. The family would like to thank the Spirit Lake Ambulance Staff, Devils Lake Ambulance Staff and the nursing staff at Altru ICU.
