Katherine Marie was born on August 29, 1925 at Fulda, North Dakota the daughter of Jack and Catherine (Schell) Bachmeier. At a young age she moved with her family to the farm in Noonan Township and attended Noonan Township school. She helped on the family farm and with the household duties and caring for her younger brothers and sisters.
Katherine was united in marriage to Jack L. Schiele on January 8, 1945 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crary, ND. They established their home on a farm in Noonan Township where they lived, worked and raised their family. Katherine worked side by side with her husband, milking cows, raising chickens and always having a huge garden. Her German heritage always came through in her hard work, her dedication to a well-kept house, her delicious meals, her baking skills and canning the produce of her garden-her favorite being making pickles.
In 1979, they retired from farming and moved to Devils Lake. This moved proved to be a new adventure for Katherine. She became a Foster Grandparent at College Care for Kids and worked there for 11 years, retiring in November of 2008. Of course, she was known as “Grandma Katherine” to all the children in her care. Katherine was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Katherine and Jack enjoyed life on the farm and card parties and get togethers with neighbors and friends. When the winter months presented more time indoors, Katherine embroidered dish towels and collected bells. But her largest collection was Minnesota Twins memorabilia. Now to say Katherine was a “Twins Fan” would be an understatement-she was the “ultimate” Twins fan. Katherine was a very loving, kind hearted mom, grandma, great grandma and person. Katherine was always willing and ready to help family and friends.
