Agnes Anna Haman (Schneider)

Agnes A. Haman, 93 of Devils Lake formerly of Minnewaukan, ND passed away on Wednesday morning, June 19, 2019 at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake in the loving care of her family.

Agnes Anna was born on September 24, 1925, the daughter and one of thirteen children born to Jacob and Margaret (Gerein) Schneider at Orrin, North Dakota. She grew up on the family farm at Orrin and attended Orrin School.  Being a part of such a large family, she helped with the chores, household duties and caring for younger siblings. 

Agnes was united in marriage to Mike F. Haman on September 30, 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Orrin. They established their home on a farm in Pierce County until 1949, then moved to Benson County and farmed in the Minnewaukan area.  In 1963 the family moved into Minnewaukan. Agnes and Mike retired in 1993 and moved into Devils Lake.  Mike died on August 20, 2015. 

Agnes was never idle. She was an exceptionally talented seamstress, well-known and kept very busy by clients in the Lake Region area.  She was even called upon to make costumes for the Fort Totten Little Theater. She was an avid gardener from planting, to harvesting, to canning and sharing the produce with family and friends.  Agnes was an excellent cook and baker and well known for her “German” specialties. But more than anything, Agnes was a devoted wife, loving, caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother and dear neighbor and friend to many. 

Agnes was a very active member of the church, first at St. James Catholic Church and Altar Society in Minnewaukan and after moving to Devils Lake, St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Rita’s Circle. Agnes was active in the community of Minnewaukan and Devils Lake as a member of the Benson County 55 Club and Devils Lake 55 Club.  It was always a fun day when Agnes was able to enjoy a good cup of coffee, good conversation and game of cards or playing Bingo. 

Agnes considered herself a blessed woman and had a deep faith and trust in God. Agnes’s love was unconditional, her faith unshakeable and she taught us so many lessons about life, even until her death.

Agnes is survived by her children Bernadine (Eugene) Howard, Rugby, ND, Mary (Tom) Dion, Jerome M. Haman, Marlene (Rick) Morse, Connie (Ken) Shirek all of Devils Lake, Richard Haman, Lafayette, OR, Michel Davidson, Devils Lake, Eileen (Richard) Solberg, Surrey, ND, Rose (Bill) Streifel, Oberon, ND and Denise (Paul) Arends, Devils Lake; 20 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; brother Francis (Gloria) Schneider, MN; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Irene Schneider, Devils Lake, Nettie Schneider, Jamestown, ND, Alfred (Bernie) Haman, Bismarck, ND, David Haman, Minot, ND, Agnes Duchscherer, Rugby, Frances (Ed) Braunagel, Bismarck, Leona VanNorman, Billings, MT and Betty Haman, Rolette, ND; many nieces, nephews and their families.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; husband Mike; brothers, John in infancy, Joseph, Jacob, Anthony, Raphael and Rudolph Schneider; sisters Martha in infancy, Catherine Krenzel, Sister Margaret Mary Schneider, Sister Mary Margaret Schneider and Magdaline Schneider.

Casket Bearers will be Agnes’s Grandsons, bringing forth the blessed gifts will be Agnes’s granddaughters and reading the Sacred Scriptures will be Michael Shirek and Amy Rader. Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist will be Sara Gebhardt.

Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes will be held on Monday, June 24, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary, Scripture Service and Time of Sharing at 5:00 p.m. Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
