Alice E. (Nord) Johanson, 97 of Devils Lake and Webster, ND passed away on Tuesday evening, July 10, 2018 at the Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Alice Evelyn, daughter of John A. and Irene (Dingman) Nord was born on February 12, 1921, rural Churchs Ferry, ND. She was a baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Churchs Ferry.
In the fall of 1923, the family moved to their permanent home northwest of Churchs Ferry in Irvine Township, Benson County. Alice attended the Irvine Consolidated School for all elementary grades and high school, graduating in 1938 with a class of five. At that time, students wrote State Exams to pass to the next grade from seventh grade through high school.
Alice continued her education at Minot State Teacher’s College in the fall of 1939 and graduated with a two year Standard Teaching Certificate in May of 1941. She taught in Towner and Benson Counties prior to marriage to Harfred Johanson on June 21, 1944 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake.
In the fall of 1944, she and Harfred moved to the Webster area where they farmed and raised livestock. Alice gardened, did farm chores and enjoyed cooking and baking for the family.
Alice served on the Dry Lake school board until it merged with the Devils Lake District. She did some substitute work in the Devils Lake School System and also seasonal work at Mann’s Department Store.
Starting in 2006, Alice started living at Skyview Apartments in the winter months and also served on the Ramsey County Housing Authority Board. She later moved to the Odd Fellows.
Alice was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church and WELCA and also enjoyed membership in the Eagles Auxiliary.
Alice was a woman of strong faith, strong family bonds and a strong will to live each day with love, laughter and a caring heart for her family and friends.
Alice’s loving family includes her children Lyle (Norma) Johanson, Webster, ND, Bette (Robert) Stieglitz, Fargo, ND and Donna (Karl) Klemetsrud, Hastings, MN; nine grandchildren Troy Johanson and Steven (Sharon) Johanson all of Devils Lake, Brian (Lori) Johanson, Edmore, ND and Eric (Bethany) Johanson, Bismarck, ND; Kristin Thiel, and Robin Stieglitz both of Fargo, Alisha Stieglitz, Woodbury, MN; Chaun (Michele) Klemetsrud, Minneapolis, MN and Sara (Aaron) Sachs, Randolph, MN; ten great grandchildren Jessica and Brianna Johanson, Riley and Kiara Johanson, Brandon Thomas, Jacob and Mikara Johanson, Torius Johanson, Conrad Thiel and Kaitlyn Sachs; brother Lyder Nord, Minot; brother-in-law Donald Lannoye also of Minot; sister-in-law Joyce Nord, Larimore, ND.
Loved ones who preceded her in death include her husband Harfred on August 13, 2009; parents John and Irene; grandson Kiel Stieglitz; brothers Marvin, Sidney and Victor Nord; sister Lois Lannoye; sisters-in-law Gloria, Inger and Doreen Nord;
Funeral Services for Alice will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Devils Lake, ND with Reverend Lyle Belleque officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday, July 13th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and will continue on Saturday at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
Casket Bearers for Alice will be her grandchildren. Music will be provided by Bethany Johanson, soloist and Brenda Swenseth, pianist.
