Anna Marie Laturnus as born on January 13, 1926, in Scott, Saskatchewan, Canada, one of 13 children of Sylvester and Gunda (Steffan) Laturnus. In 1945 the family moved to Starkweather, North Dakota.
Anna was united in marriage to Adam J. Hoffart on November 10, 1947 at Assumption of Mary Catholic Church in Starkweather. They made their home on the Hoffart farmstead near Rohrville, ND where she was a devoted farm wife, loving mother to Mary Ann, Eugene, Timothy, Clarice and Linda and also helped care for Adam’s father who was very ill. They farmed the land until 1975 when they moved to Devils Lake and Anna cared for beloved Adam until he died on March 17, 1997.
On March 4, 2000 Anna married Philip J. Schiele at St. Joseph Catholic Church and they made their home in Devils Lake. Philip died on October 31, 2014.
Anna enjoyed life on the farm. She loved gardening, planting flowers and trees. She was a talented seamstress and crocheted many doilies and 33 afghans for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to bake, cook and entertain family, friends and neighbors. You were always welcome to the farm or to her home in Devils Lake. She and Adam enjoyed many hours of fishing and playing cards with neighbors and family. Anna was always ready to care for anyone in need.
Anna was active in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and Christian Mother’s and later St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Jude’s Circle. She enjoyed membership in the VFW Auxiliary and volunteered to help at many church and community activities.
Anna’s priorities were her faith, family and friends. She loved her grandchildren and would do almost anything for them, then later on her great grandchildren were very precious to her. She was thrilled to be a great great grandmother. Anna’s gifts to us were many, but her most precious gift was to teach us to take care of people, feed them, help them in any way you can.
In April of 2015, Anna moved to the Odd Fellows Home and was a resident there at the time of her death.
