Anna Marie Thomas-Scott

Anna Marie Thomas Scott “Tasina Duta Win” (Red Shawl Woman), passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2024, at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital at the age of 64 years.

Anna Marie was born on July 13, 1960, in Devils Lake, ND, the daughter of Winifred (BuckElk) and Richard “Boke” Thomas Sr. The family made their home in Crow Hill. Anna graduated from high school in 1979.

Anna met Martin Whitetail Sr. in 1978, her junior year of high school, and they were the proud parents of 7 children. Anna later met Gerard “Pee Wee” Scott, and they married and were the proud parents of 6 children.

Anna stayed at home and took care of her children and grandchildren. She sewed Star Quilts, made ribbon shirts and ribbon skirts. Anna beaded her own Fancy Dance outfits, beaded moccasins, hair ties and would sew her own dresses with her Auntie Christina Alex as her teacher.

Anna bought a barrel racing horse named Red. Anna and her dad “Boke” Thomas traveled to all the rodeos in the state of North Dakota. Anna participated in barrel racing and pole bending. Anna reached the National Finals in North Dakota which took place in Medora, ND. She was so proud of and cherished Red. She would spend all day grooming and feeding him. Her Dad was so proud of Anna for going to the Nationals.

Anna also danced as a Fancy Shawl Dancer and was royalty princess of Spirit Lake in 1980. Anna was extremely competitive as a dancer. She learned to dance from her Auntie Christina Alex. Her Dad took her to all the pow-wows. He loved traveling with her and watching her dance. She had started dancing at a very young age. She always placed 1st or 2nd at every pow-wow she attended in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Everyone was so proud of her.

Anna was very caring, loving, and respectful. She was always there for her children, family and friends and would help in any way she could. Anyone Anna knew who did not have a place to call home, she would invite them into her home and care for and feed them. She had a good heart and would listen to anyone who needed someone to talk to. She would always be there for them.

Anna attended church in Oberon, ND at Grace Baptist Church under the guidance of Paster Jimmy Harris. Anna helped teach Bible Study to younger kids in 2003 at the church.
