Arlouise "Arlo" Nyland

September 10, 1932 — March 2, 2021

Arlouise "Arlo" Nyland

Arlo Nyland, 88 of Devils Lake ND departed this earth and ascended into her heavenly home on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at Eventide Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.

Donnis Arlouise Hall was born in Bottineau ND on September 10, 1932 to Norman and Gladys (Larson) Hall.  She attended grade school through the 4th grade then moved with her family to Devils Lake.  She graduated from Devils Lake Central High School in 1950.

Arlo grew up in Devils Lake and lived across the street from a young guy named Johnny Nyland, who stole her heart.  They started dating in high school when she was a freshman, and he was a senior.  They were married at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, on July 23, 1950.  Arlo and Johnny were married 59 years at the time of his death in 2009.

In 1958 Johnny and Arlo bought Electrical Service Company from Johnny’s dad.  Arlo was secretary for the business until their retirement in 1992.  After retirement they enjoyed winters in Arizona and Florida.

Arlo was an avid sports fan.  She played golf for many years and loved her Wednesday women’s golf league at the Devils Lake Country Club.  She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren in their sporting events.  She was their biggest fan and could often be heard above the crowd cheering them on.

She enjoyed most sports, but hockey and football were her favorites.  She would often be watching a game on TV while simultaneously listening to a Devils Lake game on the radio.  She loved reading and kept a record over the years of all the books she had read.  It was extremely helpful when her daughter wanted to buy her a book, she just had to check her list to make sure she had not already read it.

Arlo had a beautiful spirit and a servant’s heart.  She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  She was always willing and available for any need.  She was her children and grandchildren’s greatest advocate.  She could always be counted on to pray for their needs as well as the needs of anyone she knew who needed prayer.

The love of her life and best friend Jesus, was always with her.  She said she talked with Him all day long.  Now she sees Him face to face, and we rejoice with her.

Arlo is survived by her daughters, Jackie (Mark) Erickstad, Bismarck ND and Toni (Brent) Pflaum, Devils Lake ND, 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and her brother Keith (Janice) Hall, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, son Steve, sister and brother-in-law Bev and Don Lee, son-in-law Stuart Erickstad and sister-in-law Judy Hall.

Get yourself my darling, my pretty one, and come, come for behold, the winter has passed, the rain is over, it has gone.  Blossoms appear in the land, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtle dove is heard in our land.  The fig tree ripens its early figs.  The blossoming vines give off their fragrance.  Arise, come my darling, my beautiful one, and come, come, with Me.  Song of Songs 2: 10-13

Arlo’s family would like to thank the staff of Lake Country Manor, Heartland Care Center, and Dr. Downs, for all their kindness and their compassionate care. Her family will be forever grateful. God bless you all.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake ND with Reverend Robert Buechler officiating.  Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery following fellowship at the Devils Lake Elks Lodge.
