Bennett V. Mudgett

Bennett V. Mudgett, “Holy Elk Friend” of Devils Lake passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital with many dear family members at his bedside. He was 54 years of age.

The Wake for Bennett will be on Friday, December 20, 2024 at the Crow Hill Recreation Center beginning at 5:00 p.m. The procession to Crow Hill will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Friday from City Plaza, Devils Lake. The Funeral Service will be on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Crow Hill Recreation Center. Burial in St. Jerome’s Cemetery.

Bennett Vernon Mudgett was born on April 27, 1970, the son of Lillian (Thomas) and Allen Mudgett Sr. in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1971 the family moved to the Spirit Lake Nation and Bennett started his education at the Fort Totten Elementary School. He then went onto the Wahpeton Boarding School and graduated from the 8th grade. He returned to the Spirit Lake Nation and attended Four Winds High School. Through hard work and determination he obtained his GED.

Bennett worked for a time as a diesel mechanic, and later received his certification in carpentry from Cankdeska Cikana Community College. He drove semi-trucks for the family trucking business and held various jobs with area construction crews.

Bennett loved his family and felt so blessed to have them at his side in his last days. Bennett has left us much too soon, but we will keep his memory in our hearts forever. Rest in Peace.

Bennett’s loving family include his precious daughter Britney (Ean) Redroad Mudgett; grandchildren Raven, Isiah, Charly, Jade, Mila, and Kari; adopted sister Bobbie Sue Mudgett; siblings who survive and the loved ones of siblings who have passed away, Elisa Jane (Richard), Marcella (Ronnie), Chris Mudgett, Greg Mudgett, Arthur (Cindy) Mudgett, Rodney (Mary Jane) Steve, Perry Mudgett Sr., Rose Mudgett, Joni (Mark), Jerrid (Janet) Mudgett Sr.; godson Perry Mudgett Jr.; many, many, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bennett was reunited with his parents Lillian and Allen Sr., sister Corina Steve, brothers Curtis Allen Mudgett, Richard Mudgett, Ronnie Mudgett Sr., Melchior Mudgett and Mark Mudgett, nephews Parker Mudgett, Darrett Mudgett, Nilus Blacklance,  Marshall BlackLance Sr.  niece Ericha Elise Mudgett, many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents.

Pallbearers will be Duane “Dewey” Mudgett Sr., Jerrid Mudgett Jr., Brandon Thomas, Garrett Mudgett, Perry Mudgett Jr., and Barrett Mudgett Sr.
