Bernard “Stormy” Rainbow, “Ohitika Hoksina” (Powerful Storm Boy) 55 of Crow Hill District of the Spirit Lake Nation began his journey to the Spirit World on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Prince of Peace Care Center in Ellendale, North Dakota. Bernard was born on December 11, 1962 at Devils Lake, ND the son of Julius Rainbow Sr. and Norma (Lambert) Cavanaugh Rainbow. He was one of 15 children born to Norma. Stormy grew up in the Crow Hill District, attending school in Oberon and Fort Totten, ND. He worked for a time at Brunswick in Fort Totten and the Spirit Lake Casino as a dishwasher.  Stormy was plagued with many health problems much of his life which made working very difficult for him. Stormy married Amy Charboneau in 1988 and they were the proud parents of two children Bernard Jr. and Ricki. They established their home at Crow Hill where they raised their family.  Stormy called the Crow Hill District home for his entire life.  He was a boxer when he was younger. His Dad would take him to boxing matches in the area. He liked to cook for his mother when they were together. He liked to hunt with his brother-in-law Mark and especially enjoyed spending time with his nephews, playing cards and dice. He loved his children and was so proud to be a grandpa. He loved his children Ricki and Ben very much and there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them.  When the weather permitted, he was seen riding his bike to the Casino where he enjoyed playing “his machines” and visiting with friends to find out “what was going on” in the area.  Stormy’s loving family include his son Bernard Rainbow Jr. and daughter Ricki Rainbow (Saunders Jackson); grandsons Dayn Jackson and Xavier LeNoir; sisters Janice (Vincent) Cavanaugh, Martina (Mark) Robertson, Margaret Cavanaugh, Connie (Ronnie) Rainbow, Tammy (Richard) Rainbow, Bernadette (Darrel) Bergrud, Sharon Rainbow and Cheryl GoodIron; brothers Julius Rainbow Jr. and Myron Lambert, many nephews, nieces and cousins and several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents Norma and Julius; brothers Russell “Rusty” Cavanaugh, Richard “Cowboy” Cavanaugh, Howard Cavanaugh, Rudolph Cavanaugh and Victor Rainbow; sister Allura Dawn “Karen” Rainbow.
