Brenda Kay Barstad

Brenda K. Barstad, 64 of Devils Lake ND passed away after a courageous battle against cancer on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital with family at her side.

Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake ND on Thursday, September 24^th, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.   Private services will be held on Friday with burial in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan ND.

Brenda Kay was born in Devils Lake ND on May 5^th, 1956, daughter of Tilford and Beverly (Anderson) Schlieve.  She was born and raised in Devils Lake, graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1974 and continued her education at Lake Region State College and NDSU. 

Brenda was united in marriage to Herby Kim Barstad on August 19, 1977 in Devils Lake where they established their home and raised their children. 

Brenda’s first job was as a car hop at “The Barrel”.  She was then employed at White Mart for a number of years.  Brenda then worked for DPCAA (Dakota Prairie Community Action Agency) for 25 years, retiring in 2016. 

Brenda was a long time member of Peace Lutheran Church, the XI Tau Sorority and the ELKS Club.  She was a strong supporter of many community events. As a member of the Lake Region Anglers Association and most recently a member of the ND Game and Fish Department Tournament Committee she helped at the community fish fries and the local fishing tournaments.   Brenda was an avid fisherwoman, and loved the challenge and the competition of a tournament.   She was a proud supporter and fan of Devils Lake High School hockey.  She was also involved in the Camp Grafton Family Support Group and other Camp Grafton activities.

Brenda’s greatest passion was her four grandchildren.  They were her pride and joy, each one held a special place in her heart. 

Brenda’s loving family include her son Justen (Kay) Barstad and their children Myles and Ily all of Bismarck ND and daughter Nicole (Darren) Wheeling and their children Emmery and Kinley all of Detroit Lakes MN; special friend Mearl; sisters Michelle (Doug) Kupitz of Bessemer, MI, Tamra (Larry) Elshaug of Devils Lake and Connie Regan of Moorhead MN; brothers Todd (Teresa) Schlieve of East Grand Forks MN and Terry Schlieve of Great Falls MT; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Cathy (Clayton) Henke, Devils Lake, Colin (Judy) Barstad, Woodlake ND, Dwight (Judy) Barstad, Colorado Springs CO, Brenda (Rick) Schnaderbeck, Monte Vista CO and Brent Barstad, Prior Lake MN; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Tilford and Beverly, husband Kim on July 7, 2007, infant daughter Mikayla, father-in-law and mothers-in-law Herby and Ruth Barstad and Rose Barstad. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
