Dr. Cameron B. Mikkelsen DVM, 90 of Devils Lake ND passed away on Friday, April 29, 2022, at his home in the loving care of family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Cameron Baker Mikkelsen was born on October 21, 1931, at Devils Lake ND the son of Herluf G. and Hope (Baker) Mikkelsen. He was reared on the family farm at rural Webster ND and attended the Morris #2 School through the 8th grade and then in September of 1945, attended Devils Lake Central School, graduating with the class of 1949.
Cam worked on the family farm for 2 years, then entered the United States Navy on March 14, 1951. He served on the USS Leyte at the Naval Base in Green Cove Springs, Florida, and on the USS Donner around the Mediterranean Sea. He was honorably discharged on February 15th, 1955, with the rank of MM3 (Machinist’s Mate Third Class).
He enrolled in the Agricultural College (NDSU) in Fargo the fall of 1955 and completed pre-veterinarian courses and entered the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota in the fall of 1958. He graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in the spring of 1962.
Cam married Kay Gerrard of Sarles ND in August of 1958 and they were the proud parents of four sons
Cam practiced large animal medicine in North Dakota for 42 years. He owned his own practice in Oakes, Bowman and Beach, North Dakota and then did relief work in Jamestown and New Rockford, retiring in 2004. After retiring as a Veterinarian, Cam worked on the Ken and Karen Tollefson farm for 13 years.
Cameron was united in marriage to Joyce Nelson on September 18, 2001, in Grand Forks, ND and they established their home in Devils Lake. Together they enjoyed square dancing and traveling. Cameron was an avid reader and enjoyed many years of hunting, especially waterfowl.
Cam was a member and elder of the Webster Chapel in Webster, ND, life member of the Elks Lodge #1137 in Dickinson ND, 40-year member of the Devils Lake Masonic Lodge. He gave back to his veterinary career as a life member and past president of the North Dakota Veterinary Medical Association and was an Honor Roll member of the American Veterinary Association.
Cam served his country with honor, believed in the promises of his Lord and Savior and loved his family with all his heart.
Cameron’s loving family include his wife Joyce; sons Brian (Van-Ha Nguyen) Mikkelsen, Rancho Cordova, California, Forrest (Kari) Mikkelsen, Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Paul (Nancy) Mikkelsen, Dickinson, North Dakota; four granddaughters Sydney Mikkelsen, Marit (Kaler) Ray, Melissa (Alex) Werner and Kristen Schoch; nine great grandchildren; step children Jim (Coralie) Nelson, Beulah ND, Danny Nelson and Donna Wolf both of Devils Lake ND; eleven step grandchildren, nineteen step great grandchildren and twin step great great grandchildren; mother of his sons Kay Mikkelsen; brother Bert Mikkelsen, Devils Lake and sister Marit (Gary) Petrek, Jamestown ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Glen, brothers Norman Mikkelsen and Lynn Mikkelsen, step-daughter Debra Peterson and daughter-in-law Debra Nelson.
Funeral Services for Cameron will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Johanna Buchholz, and Reverend Trudy Dumont officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan ND. The funeral service will be live streamed at facebook.com/oslcdevilslake.
Casket Bearers will be Doug Baker, Debbie Nelson, Dr. Carolyn Tedrow, Jim Mikkelsen, Cameron Petrek and Cameron Heidrick. Honorary Bearers are Ken Tollefson, Carl and Rose Duchscherer, Vicki Schmaltz and the CAVE Men Club.
