On Thursday, May 12, 1994, a son Carl Robert Kolbo was born in Devils Lake, ND to his proud parents, Mark Kolbo and Lisa Crandall. His family lived in Brocket until 1999, then moved to Crary, ND. Carl was educated from pre-school through high school with the Lakota Public School System, graduating with the class of 2012. He continued his education at Lake Region State College, graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree in 2015 and then attending the University of Wisconsin in Superior, with a planned graduation with a Degree in Chemistry in the spring of 2018, but health conditions, delayed that graduation.
Music in some way, shape or form, was always a part of Carl’s life, along with so many other talents and activities. He was elected the Snow King at Lakota High School his freshman year and played the flute and piccolo in the Lakota School Band and played the Bass Drum with the Lakota Marching Band. He participated in football and golf. He spent a lot of time at the Lake Region Curling Club in Devils Lake curling in league and bonspiels. He also traveled all over ND curling in different bonspiels. He had great skill as a curler and was a member of the State Championship Junior Curling Team in 2012 and this allowed the team to participate in the National Junior Curling Event in Boston, MA in January 2013. He enjoyed curling while attending UW-Superior, was a tutor and lab assistant in the Chemistry Department and again part of the band and orchestra at the University.
Carl was a part of the Grand Forks Youth Orchestra, the Devils Lake Community Elks Band and the Devils Lake Community Orchestra. He was a charter member of the Lake Region State College Band, played music at many of the local churches and area cantatas. You never knew what instrument he may be playing in the various activities. As a skilled musician he mastered the piano, flute, piccolo, string bass, electric guitar, electric bass and percussion and could pick up most any instrument and play it.
Carl enjoyed membership in the Lakota and Devils Lake Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and also the Lutheran Youth Organization through Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Devils Lake.
Carl’s passion and love for music was such a strong bonding force with his family and with his faith. Each note he played resounded with love, kindness and compassion, touching the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. Carl was a kind and gentle person and would help anyone with anything when asked.
Carl’s loving family include his parents Mark and Lisa, Crary, ND; aunts and uncles Laurie and Bill Bastian, Duluth, MN, Terri Crandall and Genia Lemonedes, Colorado, Robert C. and Linda Kolbo, Cheyenne, WY, Leslie McDonald, Minneapolis and Paul and Sarah Kolbo, Bloomington, MN; cousins Jenni, Christina, Justin, Travis, Julie, Meghan, Cailin and Jade; godparents Paul and Sarah Kolbo, Laurie and Bill Bastian, and Terri Crandall.
