Catherine “Cathy” Deplazes Young was born April 22, 1929 in Hurricane Lake Township by York, North Dakota, the daughter of Plazi “P.A” Deplazes and June (Von Alman).
Cathy attended grade school in Hurricane Lake Township of Pierce County then Saint Mary’s Academy in Devils Lake, graduating in 1947. She also took classes at Lake Region Junior College. After graduation, Cathy worked in the office of Regal Construction Company who built the gymnasium at Saint Mary’s Academy and then in the office of Fairmont Foods of Devils Lake.
Cathy was joined in marriage to Lloyd Young on June 14, 1951 at Saint Joseph Church in Devils Lake. They made their home on the family farm near Saint Michael, ND until later that year when they moved to Butte, Montana where she worked in the office of Safeway Foods.
Lloyd was drafted into the US Army in the fall of 1952 and they lived at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri until he received a hardship discharge because of the illness of his father.
In 1957, Cathy went to work for the North Dakota Job Service until she retired as Placement Supervisor in May 1988.
Lloyd and Cathy lived in rural Devils Lake from 1958 until 1975, when they built a new home on Six Mile Bay where they lived until being flooded out in 1996. They then moved to Lunde Subdivision just south of Devils Lake. They also enjoyed spending several winters (1991-2003) living in Apache Junction, Arizona until Lloyd’s passing on February 2, 2004. Cathy returned to Arizona for several more winters until her health made it hard to continue. Cathy resided at Heartland Court 1 from 2014 to present.
Lloyd and Cathy did extensive traveling over the years, visiting 44 states including Alaska and Hawaii. They also visited several other countries which included Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Switzerland held a special place in Cathy’s heart as they visited several relatives during one of their trips.
Cathy was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Cathy is survived by her children, daughter and son-in-law Margo and Ross Garske Sparta, WI, son and daughters-in-law: Terry and Kathy Young Devils Lake, ND and Mark and Patty Young Grand Forks, ND, 7 grandchildren: Brandon (Danielle) and Brent (Katie) Garske, Kyle (Amelia), Matthew, Michael (Angel), Aaron (fiancé Steffanie) and Lindsey Young, 10 great-grandchildren: Windyna, Kody, Brayden, Jordan, Brooklyn, Jada, Myles, Connor, Grayson, and Sloan; brother-James Deplazes Cando, ND; sisters: Sally Johnson, Butte, MT and Della Johnson, Bismarck, ND and many nieces and nephews.
Cathy was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, parents, brothers, Pat, Joseph (Bud) and William (Billy) Deplazes; brothers-in-law: Robert (Bob) Johnson and Gordon Johnson and sisters-in-law: Lylis Deplazes and Royce Deplazes.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 9, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Sunday, July 8th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
Casket Bearers for Cathy will be her grandsons Brandon Garske, Brent Garske, Kyle Young, Matthew Young, Michael Young and Aaron Young and Dave Buchmeier.
