Charles Schumacher, age 80, Devils Lake, ND died on Saturday, July 22, 2017 peacefully at his Wood Lake summer cabin. Charles Dale was born October 29, 1936 in Grand Forks, ND to Peter and Hazel (Bateman) Schumacher. Charles worked on the family farm and attended school in Reynolds, ND, graduating in 1956. He met Marie during high school at a wedding. After high school he volunteered for the Army and served in the Korean Conflict, protecting the DMZ 38th Parallel, driving a Jeep for the Major. When he returned from his two year stint with the military in 1958, Charles and Marie Brda were united in marriage on November 25, 1958 in Tabor, MN. They made their home in Devils Lake, where Charles worked in pest control for Lystads and Ecolab for 38 years until his retirement in 1996. He grew up with polka, waltz, accordion music and Westerns, which he even enjoyed watching on TV to this day. For nearly 50 years, his heaven on earth were his cabins in Canada and Wood Lake. He enjoyed his trips to Canada at least three times or more in the summer for hunting, fishing and enjoying the wilderness. Due to physical limitations his last trip there was in June of 2016. Even when their children were young, Charles and Marie spent the whole summer at Wood Lake. When Charles retired, the couple wintered in Arizona. Marie passed away on March 25, 2010. He continued to winter in Mesa for several years. Charles is survived by three daughters, Cathy (Rick) Soper, Faribault, MN, Tammy Reierson, Devils Lake, Vickie Sorenson, Otsego, MN, daughter-in-law Julie Schumacher, Fargo, ND; 12 grandchildren Samantha (Brian) Kohout, Stephanie Soper, Joseph (Elizabeth) Reierson, Brock Reierson, Niki Reierson and Trent Reierson, Lexi (Dylan) Anderson, Chloe Schumacher, Krista Schumacher, and Mya Schumacher, Taylor Sorenson and Briar Sorenson; 4 great grandchildren Cameron and Cecelia Kohout, Lukas and Samuel Reierson; brother Robert (Liz) Schumacher of Reynolds, ND and his beloved cat, Buffet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Hazel; wife, Marie; son, Shane; brothers Merle Schumacher and Lyle Schumacher. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Father Alex King celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 26th beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
