David was the 5th child born to Ernest and Mary Grove on April 29th, 1961 on the farm at Pleasant Lake, ND. He was living on the farm and schooled in Rugby, ND until 1975 when he went to live with his Grandfather, Albert Hankey, on a farmstead north of Tioga, ND where he completed his freshman year of high school. He then joined his parents and brother, Victor, on the farm at Ashville, Manitoba, Canada and was schooled in nearby Gilbert Plains. After 11th grade, he moved back to Tioga, ND and boarded a room at Pearl Jorstad’s, worked at A-1 Tioga Machine Shop and completed high school.
Just after graduation he joined the U.S. Army in October of 1979 and completed basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, MO in June of 1980 and Advanced Individual Training at Chanute, IL. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX and later at Stuttgart, Germany. After active duty tour he returned to Tioga, ND. He then worked on a farm for Maynard Jorstad and later in the oil field on oil rigs, pipe lines and roustabout. He took up a courtship with Kimberly Dawn Heimdal and they were married June 7th, 1985. As the years passed, Samantha, Andrew, and Cheri-Rae were born. After the service station was dismantled, he took on odd jobs out of Tioga, Williston, and Minot. In 1991, he started working at the North Dakota Military Academy at Camp Grafton, Devils Lake, ND as an engineering instructor. After he was joined by his family and established in Devils Lake, he and Kimberly were blessed with the arrival of their 4th child, Benjamin. David and the children moved to a small farmstead on the west side of Devils Lake in September of 2000. David retired from the military on April 30th, 2009. He received numerous medals, ribbons, accommodations, and achievements. After Active Duty retirement he maintained the small farmstead and has worked odd jobs to keep busy and help others.
