Dean “Deano” Hovern of Devils Lake, ND passed away at age 69 on January 3, 2020 at Trinity Hospital in Minot ND.
Dean Thomas was born on January 19, 1950 to Alton and Edna (Perhus) Hovern. He grew up in Lester Prairie, MN, where he was active in many sports and enjoyed seeing his father’s artwork displayed in his childhood hometown. He attended Concordia College where he played football and played in various bands. He was employed by Northwest Beverages/Johnson Brothers.
He was married to Shirley (Ripley) Hovern on April 23, 1977 and resided in Devils Lake where his daughter Melissa was born.
Dean was an outgoing person and a great musician. He loved music. He spent his life playing his guitar and trumpet in the Elks Band, Shrine Band, Legion Band and the famous “Thick, Thin and Chunky”. He also was part of the Benaszeski Polka Band, Free Beer and played with the Aristocats. He also enjoyed watching his daughter participate in band and sports, especially track.
After he retired, he found a new hobby in gardening and continued to play in the bands.
He is survived by his daughter Melissa “Missy” Jason, granddaughter Alayna Holt, and grandson Weston Holt, aunt Donna Perhus and several cousins, and very special friend Jill Yantes.
He is preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles .
A Celebration of Life Service with Masonic Rites, will be held on Friday, January 10, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. at the Masonic Temple in Devils Lake with Reverend Tom Westcott officiating.
