Denise C. Bjergaard

Denise C. Bjergaard, “Ohini Cante Waste Win” (She’s Always Happy Woman) 48 of Devils Lake ND passed away on Thursday morning, August 27, 2020 at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital.

Visitation for Denise will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake ND from 3:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The Funeral Service will be on Friday, September 4^th at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with a graveside service to follow at the Spirit Lake Assembly of God Cemetery, Fort Totten ND.  Pastor Brandon Wegener will officiate.  

Denise Thomas was born on October 24, 1971 at Devils Lake ND the daughter of Richard and Sharon Ann (Lohnes) Thomas. She grew up on the Spirit Lake Nation and also received some of her education in the Minot Public School System.  

Denise met Floyd Bjergaard in Minot ND and they were united in marriage on July 24, 2000 and they were the proud parents of a son Charles, whom they loved with all their heart. Charles meant the world to Denise, he was her pride and joy, a blessing in her life. 

Denise was always wanting to learn, to increase her knowledge about so many subjects. She had a special gift in mathematics and was very good at managing her money and keeping her budget balanced because she also loved to go shopping. 

Denise was really into arts and crafts. She was always decorating the house and yard for each season and each holiday of the year.  She always made sure she had the right colored lights for her decorating themes.   She also was very talented at decorating cakes.  She enjoyed the outdoors, the beauty of nature.  She was out walking whenever she could until her increasing health problems made that impossible so you would see Floyd pushing her in the wheelchair and she had just recently gotten a motorized cart.  Denise was the only one who was allowed to cut Floyd’s hair, she always did a better job than the “professionals”.

You couldn’t spend more than a day or two with Denise and you would have to watch “Little House On The Prairie”, “Highway to Heaven”, “The Golden Girls” and “I Almost Got Away With It” on TV and the night would end watching the movie “The Burning Bed”. Of course “Midnight” the cat was never far from her side. 

Family and friends were so important to Denise and she visited them whenever she could. Of course if a family trip took you past an “Arby’s”, they would always stop and get an Arby’s Roast Beef for Midnight.  It was his favorite treat.  Denise was always a cheerful, joking person, even during health problems.

Our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and dear friend had such a loving, caring and kind heart and will be so very missed by her family. Her husband Floyd; son Charles Bjergaard; father Richard Thomas; sisters Norma Littleghost and Michelle Thomas; adopted brothers Eric BuckElk and Bernard BuckElk; adopted mom Catalina Herman; special family friend Meryle Vinje; several aunts and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother Sharon, grandparents Winifred and Richard Thomas Sr., Patrick Sherman and Marie Lohnes, sisters Kari Ann Thomas, Faye Lee Thomas, and Joni Marie Thomas, aunts Cheryl Keo and Janice Belgarde, uncles Milton, Timothy and Mike Thomas, cousin Donald “SunDuck” Belgarde Jr., adopted brother Lenny RedTomahawk and other dear relatives and friends.

Casket Bearers for Denise will be Mitchell Keo, Clint Keo, Marty Alex, Hailie Keo, Norma Littleghost-Thomas and Michelle Thomas.  

Honorary Bearers are the Yankton Family, Greybear Family, Wlaking Eagle Family, Chaske Family, Brown Family, Littlewind Family and her fellow dialysis mates and the Altru Dialysis Staff.
