Denise J. Poni-Cappo

Denise Joy Poni-Cappo, 52 of Devils Lake ND passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation will be held at St. Michael's Recreation Center on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Time of Sharing at 7:00 p.m. followed by a meal to be shared with those in attendence. The final farewell will be at 8:00 p.m. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with burial only to follow in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery. 

Denise Joy Poni-Cappo was born on December 16th, 1970 to Dennis Poni-Cappo, Sr. and Jeanette Herald at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND. She passed away on July 13th, 2023 at Altru Hospital in the presence of her family.

Denise was raised on the Spirit Lake Reservation, attended Wahpeton Indian school and Flandreau Indian school, she earned her GED from Cankdeska Cikana Community College and attended some college from Turtle Mountain Community College.

Denise worked at UTTC, Cenex gas station, Spirit Lake Casino, Warwick Public School, and road construction on the Spirit Lake Reservation. Denise enjoyed cooking for everyone she loved, dancing, singing, adventures, cruising, laughing with friends, and spoiling her grandchildren.  

 Denise is survived by her children: Yolonda "Baby"  Weber, Layla "Lovie" (Christian) Ewert,  Andraia "Babygirl" (Levi) Schwan, Mark Schwan Jr., Chad Poitra Jr., and Cale "Sweet Princess" Poitra; Her precious grandchildren: Norrah Gourneau, Aven Gourneau, Whitney Weber Jr., Hadley White, Emmah White, Rylan "Bella" Weber, Mason Ewert, Tysen Ewert, Malina Ewert, and Atlas Kudrna; Godchild: Sloane Davis; Adopted parents: Sharon Martin and Tim DeMarce; Siblings: Lorinda (Brett) Leben, Cali DeMarce, Dorrit Eagle-Venter, Nevesa Poni-Cappo LittleOwl, Memory Poni-Cappo, Crystal Poni-Cappo, Christopher Poni-Cappo, Cecilia Poni-Cappo, and Mike Martin.; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives.  

Welcoming Denise home will be her sons Forrest Weber and Nathanial Lebeau, parents Dennis Poni-Cappo Sr. and Jeanette Herald, brothers Dennis Poni-Cappo Jr., Gabriel Smith Jr., Christopher DeMarce, sister Janel Herald, grandparents William Herald, Mary Thompson and James Thompson Sr., James Kakenowash, Rose Poni-Cappo, Candace Redroad-Mckay, Arvella Mckay.   

Casket Bearers for Denise will be Mark Schwan Jr., Chad Poitra Jr., Christian Ewert, Tyler Wolters, Sloane Davis, Eric Swenson, Lorinda Leben and Lola Waanatan.  

Honorary Bearers are Michelle Christofferson, Arlis Krulish, Karen Charboneau, Tanya Twohearts Thomas, Tristan Longie, Lisa Great Walker, Cindy Ewert, Anita Aabrekke, Ann Enno and all of Denise's many friends and relatives who played a special part in her life.  

The family is incredibly thankful for all the prayers, condolences, and help from many friends and family during this difficult time. We would like to thank the ICU staff at Altru Hospital, especially Morghan and Lou for taking such great care of our mom before and after she passed.
