Donavon P. Ziegler

Donavon P. Ziegler, 74 of rural Devils Lake passed away on Wednesday evening, April 24, 2019 at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital.

Donavon Philip, son of Philip and Elizabeth (Gachne) Ziegler was born in Rugby, ND on December 9, 1944. Donavon was the 12^th of the sixteen Ziegler children.  The family made their home north of Drake, ND until 1958 when they moved to Idaho. 

Donavon proudly served in United States Army both stateside and in Korea.  

Donavon married his true love Angie Zacher, wife of 51 years. They established their first home in Idaho, In 1979 the family moved back to North Dakota. 

Donavon’s life career was with the Boilermaker’s Local Union #242.  Along with that career, after moving to Maddock, he and Angie were the owners and operators of “The Grill” restaurant until moving to Devils Lake.

He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a member of the local gun club and the VFW Post #756

Donavon worked hard to provide for his family. He enjoyed hunting and trap shooting and playing gin with his friends at he VFW. His favorite pastime was shooting Prairie Dogs.

The most important people in Grandpa Don's life were his family.  His grandchildren were his pride and joy.  Donavon loved his country, his Lord and his family with all his heart.

Donavon’s loving family include his wife of 51 years, Angie; children and their spouses Richard G. and Jacque Ziegler of Chisholm, MN, Tamera L. and Aaron Johnson of Jamestown, ND and Donavon P. and Cara Ziegler of Vancouver, WA; grandchildren Ashley Ziegler, Ashton, Aubrea and Adreann Johnson, Alyssa and Donavon J. Ziegler; sisters Eleanore Eisenzimmer, Ann (Mike) Schiele and Rose (Al) Grossman all of Minot, ND and Betty Ann (Phil) Johnson of Watertown, WA; brothers Tony (Sue) Ziegler and Andy Ziegler both of Post Falls, ID, Bill (Gloria) Ziegler, Kenwick, WA, Dave (Sue) Ziegler and Lawrence Ziegler both of Post Falls, ID; many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Valentine, John, Carl and Leonard Ziegler and sisters Brigetha Bachmier and Mary Bromley. 

Serving as Casket Bearers for Donavon will be Jerome Ziegler, Steve Grad, Ashton Johnson, Donavon J. Ziegler, Dave Schiele and Travis Sainsbury.  Reading the Scriptures will be Kristi Ziegler and Alyssa Ziegler. Gift Bearers will Ashely Ziegler, Aubrea Johnson and Adreann Johnson. 

Mass of Christian Burial for Donavon will be held on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Very Reverend C. F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass.  Visitation will be held at the church on Monday, one hour prior to the funeral Mass with a Rosary recited at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery, rural Minnewaukan, ND.
